WASHINGTON, DC: Recent events have cast a spotlight on President Joe Biden’s capability to continue serving as president. Amidst growing concerns, Vice President Kamala Harris remains reticent on the matter, adding fuel to the speculation surrounding Biden's fitness for office.

The situation unfolded following Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the presidential race and subsequent scrutiny from lawmakers, leading to calls for invoking the 25th Amendment.

Kamala Harris’s silence following Biden's withdrawal makes waves

President Joe Biden’s abrupt decision to withdraw from the presidential race has sparked quite a buzz. The decision came after his performance in the first presidential debate raised concerns about his mental fitness and overall competency. In a written statement, Biden cited health reasons for ending his re-election campaign, days after testing positive for COVID-19.

Following this announcement, Vice President Harris was promptly considered as the Democratic replacement for Biden in the 2024 election. However, some lawmakers, including Rep Nancy Mace (R-SC), believe waiting until January for Biden to leave office is unacceptable.

Fox News made several attempts to get a statement from Vice President Harris on whether she believes President Biden is still capable of serving as commander-in-chief.

Despite these efforts, her office did not provide a response. The silence persisted even as questions arose regarding Biden’s whereabouts and his communication with Harris since he tested positive for Covid-19.

Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo) formally addressed Harris, asserting that Biden’s admission of his inability to run for re-election is an indication of his incapacity to serve as president.

Schmitt’s letter pointed out, “Joe Biden has decided he isn’t capable of being a candidate; in so doing his admission also means he cannot serve as president. Therefore, it is in the best immediate interest of the safety of the United States for Joe Biden to resign from office or face removal under the 25th Amendment.”

Rep Nancy Mace echoed this sentiment, proposing a similar resolution.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “If Joe Biden does not have the cognitive ability to seek reelection, he does not have the cognitive ability to serve the remainder of his term. Tomorrow I will introduce a resolution calling on Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th amendment and assume the duties of acting President.”

Prior to Biden’s withdrawal, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is running for vice president alongside former President Trump, suggested that Congress should consider the 25th Amendment if Biden suspended his re-election bid.

Vance said in an interview with Fox News, “If Joe Biden can’t run for president, he can’t serve as president. And if they want to take him down because he’s mentally incapable of serving, invoke the 25th Amendment.”

Social media backlash against Kamala Harris

President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination, but her refusal to comment on Biden’s capability to serve the rest of his term has drawn quite a backlash on social media.

"She is part of this coverup. Don't let her off the hook," one posted on X.

"She herself is unfit," another wrote.

"She doesn't answer anything anyway. She only says words that occasionally connect to sentences," someone else quipped.

"Surprise, surprise. The Dem's trying to dodge this one too. Guess they're worried about getting burned like they did with Hillary's 'I'm feeling great' nonsense. Kamala should just come clean and tell us what we all know - that Joe's got some serious issues going on," read a comment.

"We don’t have to ask her, we KNOW he’s not," another chimed in.

Biden cancels scheduled trips

Since his withdrawal from the race, President Biden has canceled nine scheduled trips over the next two weeks. These trips included stops in California, Denver, Houston, and Austin, which were a mix of campaign and official presidential duties.

A White House source revealed that these cancellations followed Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election. Biden, who has been isolating due to Covid-19, extended his stay in Rehoboth, Delaware, until Wednesday, postponing his planned West Coast trip.

The reason behind the White House’s decision to cancel these trips remains unclear. Presidential physician Kevin O’Connor noted that Biden had almost fully recovered from Covid-19, suggesting his illness was not the primary cause.

The source told the New York Post, “They started canceling stuff when he announced he wasn’t seeking reelection,” implying a connection between his campaign withdrawal and the subsequent cancellations.

“He was supposed to leave today to start the West Coast trip, but they extended his stay in Rehoboth until the 24th,” they added.
