Kamala Harris 'honored' to be officially crowned Democratic nominee in 2024 race against Donald Trump
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegate votes to win the Democratic presidential nomination to take on Donald Trump during the November election.
Harris and Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced the development on Friday, August 2.
Virtual voting process for Kamala Harris' nomination continues
The results, however, are not yet official as the virtual voting process will close on Monday evening when Kamala Harris will accept the nomination.
Harris first announced the news during a video call on Friday, August 2.
"I am so proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has earned more than a majority of votes from all convention delegates and will be the nominee of the Democratic Party following the close of voting on Monday," Harris said during a video call on Friday, August 2, according to NBC News.
Convention delegates have been voting virtually by email or phone since 9 am ET on Thursday, August 1, in a roll call set up by the Democratic National Committee.
They have until 6 pm ET on Monday to cast their votes. Harris was already deemed the presumptive nominee by the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday, July 30, after emerging as the only qualified candidate according to the party's Rules Committee.
Kamala Harris' historic nomination for president
Kamala Harris is the first Indian-American and Black woman in the US history to win the presidential nomination of a major party.
If Harris wins the November general election against former president Donald Trump, she would be the first woman to serve as president.
She is already the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to be the vice president of the United States.
Harris is the first candidate to become the nominee for either major party without winning a single party primary since Hubert Humphrey in 1968.
"I will officially accept your nomination next week, once the virtual voting process is closed, but I’m happy to know we have enough delegates to secure the nomination," Harris said on a call with supporters organized by her campaign, accordin to NBC News.
Harris also posted on X, "I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people coming together, fueled by love of country, to fight for the best of who we are."
