SAN LUIS OBISPO: Kenneth Taylor, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, met his untimely demise after falling from a 120-foot waterfall.

Taylor, described as a budding wildlife photographer, was discovered lifeless at the base of Salmon Creek waterfall on a Saturday evening around 7:45 pm.

Salmon Creek, a popular hiking destination along Highway 1 in Big Sur, served as the backdrop for this unfortunate event, approximately 28 miles north of Cambria.

Authorities suspect Taylor slipped and fell from the waterfall's summit, leading to his fatal plunge. Stuart MacDonald, SLO County Commander, reported that deputies found him submerged in a pool at the waterfall's base.

However, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office ruled out foul play in the tragic incident. Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong delivered the saddening news, attributing Taylor's death to "an accident during his trip to Big Sur," as reported by the Daily Mail.

Who was Kenneth Taylor?

Originally from Richland, Washington, Taylor was on course to graduate the following year and had made significant contributions to campus life as a founding member of Cal Poly's Alpine Club.

Renowned for his adept hiking skills, he served as a trip leader for ASI Poly Escapes, earning praise for his technical prowess, kindness, and infectious passion for adventure.

Tributes flow in as friends and community mourn the loss

In an Instagram post, Taylor's friend Kenneth Bevens reminisced about their shared love for the outdoors and photography. "He would have loved it!" Bevens said. "The hammocks, the photos, the music, the ocean view, and all the love. When I was taking photos, I could practically feel his beaming energy and positivity!"

"I loved talking to him and hearing his laugh. He was so incredibly kind, enthusiastic, smart and gave 110% of himself to everything he did and everyone he met. Kenneth felt tremendously loved and helped others feel the same."

Taylor's impact on those around him extended beyond his circle of friends. Tributes poured in on social media, with many remembering him as a "true legend and inspiration."

University officials have reached out to Taylor's family, offering their full support, while Cal Poly provides counseling services to students and staff members grieving his loss.
