Khloe Kardashian says she was ‘misadvised’ about getting cats declawed after PETA backlash
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Reality television personality Khloe Kardashian has come under criticism from PETA and other animal welfare advocates after revealing that her two cats underwent declawing surgery, a procedure banned in several US states.
During the Wednesday, May 20 episode of the podcast ‘Khloe in Wonder Land,' Kardashian admitted regretting the decision and said she had been “misadvised” before allowing the surgery to be performed on her pets.
Khloe Kardashian says she regrets getting her cats declawed
During the podcast conversation, Kardashian explained, “I was really misadvised about getting my cats declawed. I've never owned cats before. I didn't even know that was a thing. I feel really, really terrible that I did go in this direction. I feel like that's why my cats are miserable and it was at my doing.”
The mother of two continued, “My cats wear Air Tags. They're not allowed to even go near a door. I'm so afraid if they get out, because they have no way to defend themselves. They lost their protection tools. So it makes me sad.”
Reacting to the confession, PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch told the Daily Mail, “At least Khloe Kardashian knows now that amputating cats’ toes at the joint leaves them with lifelong misery and pain and robs them of their natural ability to stretch, climb, and defend themselves.”
Nachminovitch further added, “Cats need scratching posts and regular nail trims, not mutilation surgeries done purely for human convenience. PETA urges everyone to avoid Khloe’s mistake and let cats keep the claws they were born with.”
California, where Kardashian lives, became the seventh US state to ban cat declawing for non-medical reasons after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 867 into law in October 2025.
Other states with similar bans include New York, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
Khloe Kardashian discusses behavioral struggles with Grey Kitty and Baby Kitty
The ‘Good American founder’ also spoke about the cats initially not getting along after bringing Baby Kitty home. Kardashian first adopted Grey Kitty, whom she described as a “saint of a cat,” before later introducing Baby Kitty into the household.
According to Kardashian, Grey Kitty “started peeing on one of the beds to tell us that she hates us and she's pissed that we have another cat.” She also revealed receiving several “tips and tricks” to improve the situation, including using a pheromone collar, though the accidents reportedly continued.
The reality star later discovered that Baby Kitty had started copying the other cat’s behavior. “I had to put cameras to see which cat was doing it. I found it was Baby Kitty. Grey Kitty is back to being an angel, and now I have Baby Kitty, who's a demon right now,” she said on the podcast while discussing the current situation.
Amid the ongoing cat drama, Kardashian also revealed consulting a pet psychic who suggested unusual remedies. “When it came to the cats, she was like, 'You need to get a pink litter box. The reason why she's mad is because you don't have pink.' Like, it was very strange things. I was like, ‘Yeah, man, I'm not doing all that.’ So I didn't think she was real,” she said.
The controversy also renewed attention surrounding the Kardashian family’s past interactions with animal rights organizations. In previous years, Kardashian publicly distanced herself from PETA after sister Kim Kardashian was flour-bombed at an event by a protester reportedly linked to the organization.
