Knicks finals Game 3 watch party called off over security concerns over Trump's visit
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Watch parties outside Madison Square Garden have been officially canceled for Game 3 of the NBA Finals due to enhanced security measures surrounding a visit from President Donald Trump.
The decision, made in coordination with the Secret Service, halts the massive outdoor fan gatherings just over 24 hours before the New York Knicks host the San Antonio Spurs.
Security concerns shut down large-scale plaza gathering
With just a day left before the New York Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs on their home court, local authorities finalized the cancellation alongside federal agents to settle any doubts about the outdoor events.
These massive public assemblies, which draw thousands of spectators to view the matchup on jumbo screens, have previously created logistical headaches for law enforcement even without a high-profile presidential appearance.
An MSG spokesperson later sent a statement to media outlets, saying, "The permit for the Plaza33 Game 3 watch party was denied by the city's permitting office in consultation with the NYPD. However, the White House will confirm that this is not about the president. We understand NYPD Commissioner Tisch is planning additional street closures around Madison Square Garden."
Secret Service acknowledges fan disappointment
The police department specified that this suspension is isolated strictly to the game on Monday evening, keeping hopes alive that the street celebrations can return for Wednesday's Game 4, where New York might have the opportunity to secure the Larry O'Brien Trophy depending on how the third game unfolds.
"There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only," the statement read. "This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4."
Acknowledging the team's monumental postseason performance, Matt McCool, who heads the local Secret Service branch, noted that he realized the decision would cause frustration among the fanbase.
"At the same time, our responsibility is to ensure the highest level of public safety," he said.
"After careful coordination and assessment, the Secret Service and the NYPD jointly determined that outdoor watch parties could not be accommodated in the immediate vicinity of Madison Square Garden due to the security requirements associated with an event of this scale and the need to maintain a secure environment for protective operations."
Past arrests trigger restrictions as alternative viewings fill up fast
Following New York's road win in Texas to secure a 2-0 series advantage, Friday's post-game celebrations overflowed into nearby roadways, prompting police to take over twenty-four individuals into custody.
Among those arrested, local police reported that a female fan allegedly struck a law enforcement officer in the face.
Prior to the championship series starting, city leaders initially intended to block all plaza viewings due to chaos at unregulated fan sites, though they eventually backtracked to approve a license for the opening match.
Alternative team-approved viewing options remain active for both Brooklyn Bowl and Wollman Rink inside Central Park, according to updates on the club's digital channels.
However, these backup venues mandated early sign-ups and were entirely fully booked by Sunday afternoon.
