Knicks owner pulls plug on NBA Finals watch party amid security clash with Mayor Zohran Mamdani
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A clash between New York Knicks owner James Dolan and city officials over strict security measures has led to the abrupt cancellation of a planned NBA Finals Game 4 watch party at Madison Square Garden.
The dispute erupted after Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch imposed strict restrictions and capped outdoor attendance following violent fan outbreaks at a previous gathering, sparking a public feud with Dolan.

James Dolan cancels Knicks Finals watch party
The standoff peaked on Wednesday, June 10, when Dolan announced during a sports radio appearance that the arena would not install outdoor screens for fans.
He was upset that the city capped attendance at fewer than 1,000 people due to safety concerns. Refusing to hold the event under those conditions, Dolan said, "We're not even putting up the screens. We're not about 999 people, we're about millions of people."
Dolan had hoped city leaders would reconsider and allow a larger crowd as game day approached, but officials stood firm.
Explaining his frustration, Dolan said, "(Mamdani) gave us the gift of allowing us to screen 999 people and tell, you know, 20,000, 'no'. Thank you very much."
He added that he believed Tisch and Mamdani would eventually reverse their decision to limit attendance, but "they clearly haven't changed their minds."
Mamdani later confirmed the cancellation on social media, posting, "Mr. Dolan has now decided to cancel the watch party. I know this is breaking hearts across our city. But if there's one thing Knicks fans don't need permission for, it's showing up for our team wherever we may be, no matter the block or the borough."
MSG requested a permit for a watch party for 500-999 fans. We approved that permit for 999 fans.

James Dolan slams NYC officials over restrictions
The public dispute began on Tuesday when Dolan released a statement criticizing the city's leadership.
Heavy security was already in place for Game 3 on Monday because President Donald Trump attended the matchup, requiring metal barricades and extensive security screening.
When officials announced that the same restrictions would remain in effect for Game 4, Dolan responded by labeling Mamdani and Tisch "New York City's biggest party poopers."
Dolan argued that city officials were using security concerns as a pretext to control fan celebrations.
He stated, "We now know that these restrictions were never about the President. It was just a convenient excuse to restrict how and when Knicks fans celebrate."
Asked about Dolan's criticism during a press conference, Mamdani defended the measures, saying the security plan was appropriate for an event of that size.
Fan violence sparks heightened security concerns
City leaders insisted the heightened security was necessary because of what occurred during Monday's game.
The Knicks lost 115-111 to the Spurs in Game 3 of the best-of-seven NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, cutting New York's series lead to 2-1.
While the game was underway, thousands of fans without tickets gathered at a city-approved watch party in nearby Bryant Park.

The gathering quickly spiraled out of control as thousands flooded the area, blocking traffic, standing on vehicles, and climbing scaffolding to get a better view of the screens.
According to police, the crowd became violent, with fights breaking out and glass objects being thrown. The chaos led to 21 arrests in what the NYPD described as an "incredibly reckless" response to the game.

We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon.
As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence.
