OTAY MESA, CALIFORNIA: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Senate Democrats for blocking the Department of Homeland Security’s funding bill, warning that a lapse could disrupt key operations. Speaking at a press conference with senior border officials, Noem highlighted the broad impact beyond immigration enforcement, including the Transportation Security Administration Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Secret Service.

She stressed that only 11 % of the DHS budget goes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while the remainder supports agencies vital to national security and public safety. “The rest of it is FEMA,” Noem said, underscoring that disaster response and infrastructure protection could be compromised.

Noem detailed how the funding impasse could hinder FEMA’s disaster preparedness and response. “FEMA is responsible for disaster response, for protecting our critical infrastructure,” she said. “If we had an attack or a severe disaster, FEMA runs the government’s emergency response. The Democrat Party is choosing not to fund FEMA and putting us at risk.”

The secretary framed the stalemate as more than a budget fight, saying it sends the wrong message about America’s commitment to national security.

Kristi Noem highlights risks to TSA and airport security

Noem warned that TSA officers responsible for screening passengers at airports would go unpaid if the funding lapse continues. “These officers ensure that individuals are safe to get on airplanes. After Friday, they won’t be paid,” she said, emphasizing the potential disruption to aviation security across the country.

Coast Guard and Secret Service also affected by funding block

Beyond TSA and FEMA, Noem highlighted the U.S. Coast Guard, which ensures critical shipping channels remain open during winter weather, and the Secret Service, responsible for protecting officials and visiting dignitaries. “By not funding the Coast Guard, the Democrat Party is risking food, energy supplies, and national security,” she said.

Noem called the situation “dangerous,” warning that DHS operations, including counterterrorism and cyber defense, could be severely impacted if Congress does not act.

Lawmakers urged to act before DHS shutdown

With Congress heading into a 10-day recess and negotiations stalled over Democrats’ demands for immigration policy changes, Noem urged lawmakers to reach an agreement. She framed the dispute as a matter of accountability and public safety, pressing for immediate action to keep critical services running.
