OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI: Body language expert Judi James has described the on-stage embrace between Erika Kirk and JD Vance as a "grief hug", defending the pair from critics who called the interaction inappropriate.
The embrace happened after Erika Kirk gave her first public address at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi before introducing Vance.
Body language expert explains what the hug between Erika Kirk and JD Vance really meant
James said the exchange had "two facets or layers." The first was the conventional congratulatory sign-off when speakers change over on stage.
She said, “Vance's arms are thrown out as he approaches Erika, which would be an intentional gesture to allow or mime a hug, but his hands are held out at an angle to display respect and congratulations for her speech.”
James called it "traditional form of non-verbal applause between two speakers in a 'what can I say?' congratulatory approval gesture to her and the audience."

The second, more significant layer was the emotional component in what James referred to as a "grief hug." She explained that these hugs are "traditionally more emotional and supportive or even mutually supportive than the normal perfunctory social greeting hug.”
James analyzed Erika Kirk's approach, saying that she came forward “with her arms held out higher for her hug, creating a moment of emotional vulnerability, almost like a child seeking a comfort hug."
She noticed where they had placed their hands, and said, "Vance's hands are placed on her back and hers on his shoulder blades.”
James also said about Vance, "He performs a patting gesture of what looks like consolation, and they break quite quickly as she walks off and he turns his attention to the audience."
Emotional introduction marks Erika Kirk’s first public address as CEO of TPUSA
Erika Kirk, wife of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, walked on to the stage at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, October 29 as her first Turning Point USA campus appearance since the assassination of her husband.
After speaking about how she lost her "best friend" when Charlie was killed, the mother of two introduced Vice President JD Vance to the stage. Erika, joined by Vance, wore a white T-shirt with the word “Freedom” printed on it. She paired it with black leather pants, while Vance opted for a sharp blue suit.
