Lindsey Graham's final 24 hours: Zelensky meeting, Trump call and sudden death at 71
PROVO, UTAH: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham spent his final full day in Ukraine touring a classified drone manufacturing facility, meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky and pushing for tougher sanctions against Russia before his sudden death at age 71, underscoring his longstanding commitment to Kyiv and US foreign policy.
Lindsey Graham's final visit centered on Ukraine's war effort
Just one day before his death, Graham visited a secret production facility operated by Ukrainian defense company SkyFall, where the country manufactures its "Vampire" bomber drones, also known as "Baba Yaga." The drones have become a key part of Ukraine's battlefield strategy, capable of carrying explosive payloads behind enemy lines.
Accompanied by Republican Rep Michael McCaul of Texas, Graham praised Ukraine's rapid advancements in drone technology and argued that the United States should strengthen cooperation with Kyiv in developing unmanned military systems. He said Ukraine's battlefield experience offered valuable lessons that the US should not ignore, adding that the partnership would benefit both nations.
During the visit, Graham also held talks with Zelensky. The two discussed Ukraine's urgent air defense requirements, expanded sanctions against Russia and efforts to implement agreements reached during the NATO Summit to begin licensed Patriot missile production in Ukraine.
Senator remained active on Russia sanctions before death
Graham had also announced that he had reached an agreement with the White House on updated legislation targeting Russia's energy sector. The proposed bill would impose tougher sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, a measure he believed would increase pressure on Moscow to negotiate an end to the war.
Following Graham's death, Zelensky paid tribute to the senator, noting that he had visited Ukraine 10 times since Russia's full-scale invasion and consistently advocated for stronger military assistance and sanctions. The Ukrainian leader said Graham remained focused until his final days on initiatives aimed at helping Ukraine defend itself and move closer to a lasting peace.
Lindsey Graham remained focused on policy until the end
President Donald Trump revealed that he spoke with Graham just hours before the senator's death, saying the longtime Republican sounded "fine" despite mentioning that he was "a little tired."
According to Trump, Graham called to discuss the SAVE America Act and also spoke about his recent trip to Ukraine, describing it as successful.
Trump said the two expected to meet the following day and remembered Graham as "like a member of the family." He praised the senator's ability to work across party lines, calling him an exceptional politician who could resolve difficult issues with Democrats while remaining fiercely determined when fighting for causes he believed in.
The president also reflected on the evolution of their relationship. Although Graham was once one of Trump's sharpest Republican critics during the 2016 presidential campaign and briefly distanced himself after the January 6 Capitol attack, the two later developed a close friendship built on frequent conversations, golf outings and shared political priorities. Trump said that friendship grew stronger over the years, adding that he had "never found anybody quite like him."
