TEMPE, ARIZONA: Liz Cheney issued a scathing response on Friday, November 1 after Donald Trump suggested in a speech that she be put in the line of fire, referring to her as a “war hawk.”

The former president’s remarks came during an event in Arizona with Tucker Carlson, where he attacked Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, as proponents of unnecessary warfare.

Liz Cheney calls Donald Trump 'cruel, unstable man'

In his speech, Donald Trump attacked Liz Cheney, saying, "Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face."

"You know, they're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, 'Oh, gee, well, let's send a -- let's send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy,'" he added.

Responding to Trump's remarks, Cheney took to X (formerly Twitter) as she wrote, "This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death."

She went on to call Trump "a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant."

Liz Cheney’s strong opposition on Donald Trump’s rhetoric

Former Republican Rep Liz Cheney, a vocal critic of Donald Trump since the aftermath of the 2020 election, has repeatedly expressed concerns about the former president's approach to democracy.

She condemned his violent rhetoric, describing him as a “danger to democracy and the Constitution” and calling on voters to prevent his reelection.

Campaigning alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, Cheney explained her concerns about Trump’s leadership.

“We see it on a daily basis, somebody who was willing to use violence in order to attempt to seize power, to stay in power,” she previously told ABC News.

She described Trump as “an unrecoverable catastrophe” for the country.

Donald Trump claims Americans are threatened by 'an enemy from within'

Donald Trump has previously suggested that Democratic opponents pose a more significant threat to the US than foreign adversaries, calling them “an enemy from within.”

He warned Carlson, “They’d like to have our country be a nice communist country or a fascist in any way they can.”

Senior advisor Ian Sams contrasted Trump’s rhetoric with Harris’ approach, saying, “You have Donald Trump who is talking about sending a prominent Republican to the firing squad, and you have Vice President Harris talking about sending one to her Cabinet."

"This is the difference in this race,” said Sams.

Donald Trump's campaign pushes back on interpretation of 'war hawk' comments

In response, Donald Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, argued that the former president’s words were being taken out of context.

“President Trump was CLEARLY explaining that warmongers like Liz Cheney are very quick to start wars and send other Americans to fight them, rather than go into combat themselves,” she wrote on X.
