Jen Psaki shredded as Foreign Affairs Committee summons her over her book's account of Afghanistan exit
WASHINGTON, D.C.: The chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee has cautioned former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki that she must agree to an interview regarding the mishandled United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, or else she will be subpoenaed.
This comes after the now-MSNBC host discussed the crisis in her recent book, according to the New York Post.
On Wednesday, May 22, Rep Michael McCaul (R-Texas) sent a letter to Psaki’s lawyer, claiming that at first, he had requested an interview in September of last year. However, the request was denied by President Joe Biden’s White House counsel, despite Psaki leaving her administrative post in May 2022.
What did Rep Michael McCaul write in his letter to Jen Psaki’s legal counsel?
Congressman Michael McCaul wrote to the former White House Press Secretary’s attorney, Emily Loeb, “Ms Psaki was charged with communicating the withdrawal to the American people and possesses key insights into the planning and decision-making regarding the Afghanistan withdrawal, the rapid Taliban takeover, and the evacuation of American citizens and Afghan allies.”
“Ms Psaki unfortunately advanced narratives regarding the withdrawal and evacuation that my investigation has proven untrue,” the Texas lawmaker continued.
In his concluding remarks, Rep McCaul said, “The Committee will not tolerate Ms Psaki’s continued obstruction of its critical investigation and is prepared to use all the tools at its disposal to ensure America’s representatives speak with her.”
The House Foreign Affairs Committee is set to publish a thorough report this summer on the evacuation, which was characterized by inadequate planning, hurried execution, and an ISIS-K suicide bombing at Kabul's international airport that resulted in the deaths of 13 US service members and hundreds of Afghans, all against the backdrop of the Taliban's resurgence after 20 years out of power.
Jen Psaki came into the spotlight regarding Afghanistan earlier this month when she had to correct a statement in her book ‘Say More: Lessons from Work, the White House, and the World’ claiming that President Biden did not glance at his watch during the dignified transfer ceremony for the fallen Americans at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
“It is troubling that Ms Psaki seeks to profit off the Afghanistan tragedy, and has felt comfortable writing accounts and making them available to the general public, but refuses to make herself available to Congress, the branch dedicated to representing the interest and will of the American people,” Rep McCaul wrote on Tuesday.
“Given that the Biden White House publicly supported Congressional interviews of former Trump officials,” the Texas Republican went on, “I fail to understand why Ms Psaki insists on a double standard, now rejecting similar calls for accountability, unless it is her contention that the deaths of Americans and allies are not extraordinary circumstances.”
Rep McCaul requested Jen Psaki's presence for an interview on one of three dates — June 12, June 26, or July 9. They need to finalize the arrangements for the interview by May 28.
