WASHINGTON, DC: Dick Durbin, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticized the Supreme Court for considering former President Donald Trump's immunity case, charging it with carrying out his orders.

The high court has been closely examined by Durbin's (D-Ill.) committee on ethics, and he emphasized that taking up the matter for consideration may significantly postpone Trump's upcoming trial.

Durbin told CNN’s 'State of the Union' on Sunday, March 3, "I think that is a disappointment. I think the court has acted quickly in the past when they realized that the presidential timetable was at risk. I’m really concerned with what they’ve done."

Trump's attorneys bought time with an appeal based on presidential immunity, delaying the start of his four-count criminal indictment for his alleged attempts to rig the 2020 election.

His lawyers contend that since Trump was carrying out his presidential duties to safeguard the election, the case ought to be dismissed and he is not accountable for any wrongdoing.

Both the US Circuit Court of Appeals panel consisting of three judges and US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the case, dismissed the allegations. Last Monday, the Supreme Court decided to take the case.

Notably, the high court didn't seem to take into account Trump's second argument, which was that his second impeachment should put the case in double jeopardy and force its dismissal.

It's commonly accepted that Trump is attempting to buy time and pinning his hopes on being re-elected as President which will probably provide him with additional options to get the case dismissed.

The 34-count prosecution against him claims he fabricated papers to hide hush money payments to many individuals, including porn star Stormy Daniels, to suppress potentially embarrassing material before the 2016 election. His first trial is scheduled to begin on March 25.

Durbin emphasized that he would like the Trump immunity issue to get before the Supreme Court as soon as possible. The matter will be heard by the Supreme Court on April 22. A third of the justices on the panel were appointed by Trump.
