Mamdani tries to catch reporter off guard, journalist turns the tables in seconds

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani, on Wednesday, August 12 appeared to be trying to get ahead of a reporter’s question when he suddenly asked about the journalist’s wedding ring.

But the attempt to catch the reporter off guard quickly became an uncomfortable exchange for the New York City mayor himself.

The journalist had an immediate answer, and within seconds, Mamdani was left explaining why he had interrupted the question in the first place.

Mamdani gets awkward on stage

Mamdani was holding a press conference on transportation when he noticed 'Politico' reporter Chris Sommerfeldt wearing a ring.

Just as Chris began asking his question, Mamdani asked “Chris, did you recently get married?”

Sommerfeldt looked surprised for a moment before turning the question back on him.

“No. Oh, I know you did,” he replied, referring to Mamdani’s recent marriage. Mamdani then tried to explain himself.

“I just saw your wedding ring, and I've never seen it before,” he said. But Sommerfeldt was not letting him off that easily.

“No, it's been like a decade,” the reporter said, before adding: “Are you always trying to throw me off before I ask you questions?”

“No, no, I just saw the ring,” Mamdani replied. The exchange left Mamdani in an awkward position. What appeared to be an attempt to derail a reporter’s question had instead prompted the journalist to point out exactly what the mayor seemed to be doing.

And it was hardly the first time Mamdani has found himself visibly uncomfortable when an unscripted moment lands in front of the cameras.

Not the first embarrassment for Mayor Mamdani!

One of Mamdani’s more awkward on-camera moments came during a June 2025 interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett.

Burnett unexpectedly played footage from Mamdani’s earlier days as a rapper, including his 2019 appearance as 'Mr. Cardamom'.

The clip showed Mamdani performing in an apron, leaving him grimacing and laughing as the unexpected footage played. “I didn’t think it was going to be on CNN,” he admitted.

Mamdani faced another uncomfortable scene on August 4, 2026 when he appeared at a National Night Out Against Crime event on Staten Island.

The crowd greeted him with loud boos as he took the stage at the NYPD event, and his appearance lasted less than a minute before he left.

Another controversy followed this week over security arrangements for Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, during her planned trip to Syria and Lebanon.

His office initially said NYPD officers would accompany Duwaji, but the department later clarified that it would not provide security for the discretionary overseas trip.

Mamdani called the confusion a “miscommunication” and blamed his staff for the mistake.
