The meeting came less than two weeks after former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested on federal illicit substances and weapons charges during a US-led operation in Caracas on January 3.
Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize in October for her efforts to advance democratic change in Venezuela.
Trump backs interim leader Delcy Rodríguez
Despite the cordial tone of the visit, divisions remained over Venezuela’s political direction.
Trump publicly questioned whether Machado had sufficient backing inside the country to lead in the immediate aftermath of Maduro’s arrest.
The president instead expressed support for interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, former vice president under Maduro, to oversee the transition until elections could be held at a later date.
