Mass shooting horror hits Chicago, then Trenton, 21 shot and 3 killed in back-to-back violence

WASHINGTON, DC: A mass shooting in Chicago left one man dead and nine others wounded on Saturday, August 29, followed only minutes later by another burst of gunfire in Trenton, New Jersey, where two people were killed and nine others injured. 

The back-to-back shootings struck hundreds of miles apart as police in both cities investigated what led to the violence and worked to identify those responsible.

Chicago shooting claims one life

Gunfire erupted during a late night gathering on Chicago’s South Side Saturday, leaving a 35-year-old man dead and nine others injured.

Police were at the scene at around 11.37 pm as officers worked to disperse the crowd when the shooting broke out.

The man was struck by multiple bullets and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.

The other victims were taken for medical treatment, including a 26-year-old woman who was shot multiple times in the chest.

Several of those wounded were reported to be in better condition.

Authorities have not disclosed what led to the shooting or identified any suspects.

Police also have not released descriptions of those believed to be responsible.

The investigation remains active, with Cook County Crime Stoppers offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the shooting in a post on X, saying the violence showed how quickly gunfire can take a life, alter families and leave communities grieving.

He said his administration would continue efforts to reduce gun violence, provide victim services and mental health support, and work with police to hold those responsible accountable.

Trenton shooting follows minutes later

Trenton became the second city to report a mass shooting within hours, after police were called to a neighborhood near Locust Street at around 12.25 am on Sunday, August 30, following reports of gunfire.

By the time first responders reached the scene, 11 people had been shot.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while nine others were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

Authorities have not released their conditions or confirmed the identities of those killed.

Police have also not announced any arrests or identified a motive as of the latest update.

Trenton Mayor W Reed Gusciora reacted to the incident and released a statement saying one of the victims was a man who had recently returned from prison and was working to rebuild his life. 

According to the mayor, he had recently been recognized for his efforts toward reentry and positive change.

New Jersey Gov Mikie Sherrill said she had been briefed on the shooting and that state law enforcement agencies were coordinating with Trenton investigators.
