Massive fire tears through historic Portland wharf as firefighters race to stop spread
PORTLAND, MAINE: A massive fire ripped through one of Portland’s most historic waterfront landmarks Friday evening, destroying at least one building and damaging others as firefighters raced to keep the blaze from spreading along the Old Port’s iconic Custom House wharf.
The fire broke out shortly after 5 PM on Friday, engulfing parts of the centuries-old wharf that once served as a major hub for Maine’s commercial fishing industry. Crews managed to bring the flames under control by around 7:22 PM, according to local reports, after an aggressive and coordinated response from multiple fire companies.

Firefighters battle fast-moving blaze at historic Portland waterfront
Portland Fire Department officials said the fire had already gained significant momentum by the time crews arrived on scene. Deputy Fire Chief Jon Hendricks acknowledged the difficult conditions firefighters faced as they worked to stop the flames from spreading further down the wooden wharf.

“Unfortunately, it looked like the fire had a pretty good head start on us when we got down here,” Hendricks told FOX 23. “But the first companies did a great job. And they made a really aggressive attack to keep it from spreading down the rest of the wharf.”

Despite their efforts, one building on Custom House wharf was destroyed, while neighboring structures sustained damage. Fire officials said the dense layout of the waterfront buildings and the age of the structures added to the challenge.
Old Port landmark holds deep historical and cultural significance
The Old Port district has long been a cornerstone of Portland’s identity. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Custom House Wharf served as a bustling center for the region’s fishing and maritime trade. Today, it remains a blend of history and modern life, housing restaurants, shops, and working fishing boats side by side.

Local businesses and residents watched anxiously as thick smoke billowed across the waterfront Friday night, fearing the loss of a cherished piece of the city’s heritage.
Porthole Restaurant confirms it survived the fire
One of the most recognizable establishments on the wharf, The Porthole Restaurant and Pub, confirmed it was spared from major damage. The restaurant shared an update on social media Friday night, reassuring patrons and thanking first responders.
“The Porthole is open today during regular hours if you need a familiar place to gather,” the restaurant posted Saturday.
“Our hearts are with everyone impacted by last night’s fire at Custom House Wharf. We’re grateful for the first responders and for the safety of our neighbors.”
Two firefighters injured; boats damaged in waterfront blaze
In addition to the structural damage, the fire also impacted vessels docked along the wharf. News Center Maine reported that one boat sank during the incident, while several others were damaged by the flames or firefighting efforts.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze. Officials said neither required hospitalization.
Authorities urged residents to remain clear of the area as crews continued to monitor hotspots and assess structural stability through the night.
Governor Janet Mills says state monitoring situation closely
Maine Governor Janet Mills acknowledged the fire late Friday, saying her administration was closely tracking developments as emergency crews worked to secure the scene.
I am aware of the fire on the Portland waterfront and my administration is monitoring the situation. Please avoid the area and follow the direction of local fire and public safety officials.

“I am aware of the fire on the Portland waterfront and my administration is monitoring the situation,” Mills wrote on X. “Please avoid the area and follow the direction of local fire and public safety officials.”
Fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze. Officials said the investigation could take several days, given the extent of the damage and the historical nature of the site.
