MALIBU, CALIFORNIA: A huge sinkhole formed near Nicolas Cage’s Malibu mansion on Tuesday, September 8, resulting in major damage as well as prompting the city to declare a local emergency and issue evacuation orders for affected properties.

The 62-year-old actor, who reportedly bought the property in 2024, has yet to comment on the situation.

30 feet by 30 feet sinkhole forms near Nicolas Cage's house

Reports have said that Cage was not residing at the property when the house’s driveway collapsed. Also, it is unclear how much damage the sinkhole, believed to be about 30 feet deep, 30 feet wide, and 60 feet long, has done to the house, but it did cause a gas leak.

KTLA’s Rich Prickett said, “Substantial damage done to this home, or at least the driveway to this home here in Malibu. It doesn’t appear that anybody was home. As a matter of fact, the house looks like it is under some sort of renovation.” The sinkhole is believed to have begun developing on Monday.

City officials warn 'the sinkhole poses imminent danger to the homes and residents'

Local officials have said that the situation near the sinkhole is “likely to worsen” because of high tides and rain caused by Hurricane Marie.

Deadline, citing a statement by Malibu City officials, reported, “The sinkhole poses imminent danger to the homes and residents along Sea Level Drive. As of the time of this proclamation, seven residences have been red-tagged due to hazardous conditions resulting from the sinkhole, and an additional 24 residences will be red-tagged due to the loss of safe vehicular access.”

“Gas service to the affected area has been shut off, and water service may also be discontinued as conditions warrant. These circumstances have significantly impaired access to affected properties and created conditions requiring immediate emergency response and protective measures,” it added.

Officials say emergency response will be hindered due to collapsed road

The statement forecast that the conditions were likely to worsen and warned that “Emergency personnel access is severely constrained and may be impassable, due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed.”

“The intact portion of the roadway is too narrow to accommodate emergency response vehicles, including fire engines and other large apparatus, creating a substantial risk to public safety and emergency response capabilities,” it read.

Apart from Malibu, Long Beach is also on high alert because of Hurricane Marie, and nearly 20 homeowners were asked to evacuate on Monday night.

The Long Beach Fire Department said, “These evacuation orders are being issued out of an abundance of caution while the Building Department evaluates the structural integrity and condition of these homes.”
