NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the new mayor of New York on Thursday, January 1. His inauguration officially marked the end of former mayor Eric Adams' time in office, and reportedly, some of the policies he implemented.
During his first day in office, Mamdani signed five executive orders, including one that would revoke all orders issued by Eric Adams after September 26, 2024, to ensure that New York had a “fresh start.”
Zohran Mamdani signs first executive orders as NY mayor
On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, signed five executive orders, including one that revoked executive orders signed by Eric Adams after September 26, 2024, the day the former mayor was accused of federal corruption charges.
The order read that all orders issued prior to that date would be continued unless "specifically revoked, revised, or superseded by another order."
"All Executive Orders issued on or after September 26, 2024, and in effect on December 31, 2025, are hereby revoked," the order stated.
However, there were some exceptions, such as the provisions of the emergency orders “pursuant to section 24.”
Some of the other orders that Zohran Mamdani signed included the revitalization of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants by enlisting two new task forces aimed at increasing the speed of housing construction on city-owned land.
He also started a Land Inventory Fast Track task force that would leverage city-owned land to speed up residential development, boost supply, and decrease the costs.
The Streamlining Procedures to Expedite Equitable Development task force would be in charge of targeting bureaucracy and the red tape that resulted in inflation and the stalling of housing development.
Zohran Mamdani vows to govern 'expansively and audaciously'
During his first address as the mayor, Zohran Mamdani stated that while writing the address, he was advised that it was an occasion to “reset expectations,” but that he had no plans to do so.
He added that the only expectation he wanted to reset was “that of small expectations.”
“Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously,” he stated.
Mamdani stated that while his government may not always succeed, it would never be accused of “lacking the courage to try.” He added that the New York City Hall would not hesitate to use its power to improve the lives of New Yorkers.
He added that they had turned to the private sector for greatness “too long,” while accepting “mediocrity” from public servants.
He said that he did not blame those who questioned the government, or whose faith in democracy had been shaken. However, he promised to “restore” New York’s trust by walking a different path.
