Meg Ryan hopes Rob and Michele Reiner’s murder brings ‘awareness’ after addict son Nick is charged
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Meg Ryan has spoken out following the tragic death of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their house, after which their addict son Nick Reiner was charged with murder.
In her statement, the actress hoped that the incident might lead to greater awareness around the issue.
Meg Ryan's Instagram post
A day after Nick was charged with the murder, Ryan took to Instagram on Wednesday, December 17, hoping that the tragedy would raise some awareness.
“Oh how we will miss this man,” her caption began. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle, for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” the 'When Harry Met Sally' actress wrote. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
The post featured a black and white photograph of Reiner and Ryan in their younger years dancing hand in hand.
The story behind the classic rom-com
'When Harry Met Sally', directed by Rob Reiner, is considered one of Ryan’s most beloved performances and raised the actress’s fame to an icon of the rom-com genre.
Reiner revealed in a 2024 interview with Chris Wallace that he was convinced to change the ending of the film to its romantic conclusion after falling in love with Michele, whom he met while working on the project.
“The original ending of the film that we had was that Harry and Sally didn’t get together,” Reiner said.
“I had been married for 10 years, I had been single for 10 years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody, and that gave birth to ‘When Harry Met Sally.’ I hadn’t met anybody, and so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other.”
Nick Reiner's struggle with addiction
Nick Reiner has spoken openly in past interviews about his struggles with addiction, saying that treatment began when he was a teenager and included periods of homelessness.
In a 2016 interview with People, he said that he spent weeks sleeping on the streets while cycling in and out of rehab.
Rob Reiner discussed the experience during a 2016 appearance on NBC’s 'Today', saying that the film, 'Being Charlie', a semi-autobiographical film co-written by Nick that explored addiction, homelessness, and the strain, forced him to confront the depth of what his son had endured.
"What I didn’t understand was the depth of what he was going through," Reiner said. "The process of making this film forced me to see what he was experiencing and what his mother went through."
