Five months after revealing that she and Thompson had ended their relationship after a year of dating, Megan Thee Stallion shared insight into how she has been coping with the split.
Speaking to InStyle in an interview published September 9, she said, “I’m trying my best,” before describing the experience as feeling like she had been “put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels, and a cactus. It was very rough.”
Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, reflected on what the relationship taught her, saying, “What’s meant for you is always going to work out.” She added that if something is constantly making a person feel uncomfortable and on edge, “you probably are not supposed to be there.”
She explained that she had been “trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong” and trying to fit herself into someone else’s life. “I was losing myself a little bit,” she said. “I am now in the space of finding me again.” Megan added, “You will not disrespect me. And you will be thankful. Period.”
The rapper announced the breakup on her Instagram Stories on April 25, 2026, later sharing a statement with PEOPLE. “I’ve made the decision to end my relationship with Klay,” she said, adding that “trust, fidelity and respect are non-negotiable” for her and that when those values are compromised, “there’s no real path forward.”

Megan emphasized that she cannot stop being herself or put her career aside for a relationship. The Grammy-winning artist has also appeared on Broadway and established herself as a successful businesswoman. “I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me,” she said.
She continued, “I love being me. I love rapping. I love interacting with my fans. I love shooting music videos.” She said any future partner will have to understand that she is “her own person” and “her own boss.” Megan added, “I cannot be minimized. I will not be behind any man. I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner. I’m never gonna take the backseat to anything.”
Looking ahead to dating again, Megan said she has learned what type of person she wants, what she will tolerate and what she will not tolerate. “And if you can’t take that, we just gotta respectfully go our separate ways,” she explained.
For now, Megan said she is happily spending time alone. “Being by yourself is okay,” she affirmed. “Like, I ain’t smiled so much in so long. I’m outside twirling in the grass like, ‘Wow, it’s a beautiful day outside!’”
She also offered reassurance to people dealing with heartbreak, saying, “Somebody not seeing your values doesn’t make your value go down.” She added that being cheated on “doesn’t have anything to do with you” and does not make someone “less attractive” or “less of a good person.”
