Megan Thee Stallion reflects on balancing rap persona and personal life: 'Two different lives'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Rapper Megan Thee Stallion recently reflected on the challenges of balancing her career and personal identity while speaking about the difference between her public image and private self.
In a new interview with 'Entrepreneur' on Wednesday, May 5, she explained how fame changed the way people interacted with her, even those who had known her for years. It also addressed learning to protect her personal relationships and emotional well-being while navigating life in the spotlight.
Megan Thee Stallion discusses fame and her personal identity
During the interview, she explained that she had to learn how to separate “Megan Pete” from “Megan Thee Stallion.” She continued, "When I'm interacting with my people and my Hotties, I want them to feel like — when they had that experience with Megan — it don't matter if they were having a bad day, because once they met me, their day was better."
Megan Thee Stallion further emphasized, "They might have felt some type of relief." There was a time when the 'HISS' rapper felt her work persona was taking over, as people increasingly began treating her differently because of her fame.
"I was Megan Thee Stallion all the time. I was on all the time. And people treated me that way. Like, even people that had known me for so long in my life, they no longer treated me like the Megan that they grew up with. They started treating me like Megan Thee Stallion," she said.
The artist further revealed, "And I didn't like that. I'm like, 'This is so crazy. You know me, so why are we sitting here and you're recording everything I do? Or why are we talking about other famous people all the time?' It was hard for me to experience."
Over time, Megan Thee Stallion also learned to identify transactional relationships by recognizing who was “going to be long-term and who’s just the reason in the season. I had to learn that, when I go home, I can't take my whole day with me into my personal life."
"Like, whatever happened to Megan Thee Stallion today, I should not take that home to my real friends and my real relationships and my family. This is two different lives I'm living," she also acknowledged.
Megan Thee Stallion reflects on breakup and ‘Moulin Rouge!’ exit
Her comments about relationships come shortly after she confirmed her breakup with NBA player Klay Thompson. In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the rapper said she ended the relationship because “trust, fidelity and respect” are values she considers non-negotiable.
She added that once those values are compromised, there is no clear path forward and that she is now focusing on herself and moving ahead with “peace and clarity." Megan Thee Stallion also recently completed her run in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Friday, May 1.
Although her performances were originally scheduled through May 17, she announced that her final appearance would take place on May 1. The announcement came shortly after news of her breakup became public.
In a message shared on Instagram, she thanked the cast, crew, and fans for supporting her throughout the Broadway experience. She said it had been an honor to join the “Moulin Rouge!” family and praised the dedication, stamina, and work ethic of everyone involved in the production.
Megan also expressed gratitude to fans who attended or planned to attend the performances, calling the journey an “incredible” experience.
