Melania parrots Trump's claims as she blames husband's rivals for ‘unfair’ 2020 election result in memoir
WASHINGTON, DC: Former first Lady Melania Trump has made her stance on the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath clear in her newly released memoir 'Melania.'
Echoing her husband Donald Trump’s baseless claims, Melania criticized the results of the 2020 election, asserting that "enemies" worked against her husband to prevent his reelection.
Her reflections also touch upon the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and her strained relationship with former staff members, revealing a perspective that aligns closely with her husband’s narrative on these events, The Independent reported.
Melania Trump fully embraces husband Donald's denial of 2020 election results
In her memoir, Melania Trump fully embraced her husband’s denial of the 2020 election results, stating that she, too, believes the election was "unfair."
Referring to “enemies” in the media, Big Tech, and the so-called “deep state,” Melania claims there was a deliberate effort to thwart Trump’s bid for a second term in office.
She wrote, “The media, Big Tech, and the deep state were all determined to prevent Donald’s reelection, by any means necessary.”
In her view, these forces colluded to create an environment in which a fair election was impossible. Melania insisted she was not alone in questioning the integrity of the process, stating, “I am not the only person who questions the results.”
Her narrative of the 2020 election painted a picture of uncertainty and disbelief. Melania recalled watching the election night unfold at the White House with her son Barron while Trump moved in and out of the room.
One of the pivotal moments in her story comes when Fox News projected that Arizona would be called for Joe Biden, a decision that left her in shock.
She wrote, “At 11:30 pm, Fox News projected that Arizona would flip to Biden. I couldn’t believe it. How could they call it so early before all the votes were counted? It was another sign that this was not a normal election.”
As she delved further into the election process, Melania revealed how the complexities of mail-in ballots and varying state deadlines contributed to her growing suspicions.
“Due to the way different states counted mail-in ballots and the various mail-in deadlines, the results would not be clear for several days. At this point, everything was called into question for me,” she added.
Melania Trump’s memoir sheds light on the January 6 Capitol riot
Melania Trump’s views, however, clash with established election procedures. Experts have pointed out that the timeline she questioned is a standard part of the American electoral process.
According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, state laws govern when different types of ballots are counted, and it can take weeks to certify official results after Election Day.
“State laws and practices vary on when mail ballot results, early voting results, and Election Day results are released. State laws guide the certification timeline, but in some states, it can be several weeks after Election Day,” the center explained.
Despite this explanation, Melania expresses dissatisfaction with the way elections are conducted.
She calls for a return to what she sees as a simpler, more straightforward process.
“An election should be held on a single day, and polls should close at midnight. Votes are counted, and that’s it. We need that certainty. That’s how fair elections should be done,” she argues.
Melania’s memoir also sheds light on the January 6 Capitol riot, a day that continues to be a focal point of political debate in the United States.
She acknowledged noticing a large gathering of people outside the Capitol from her vantage point at the White House but insisted that her attention was focused elsewhere.
In what seems to be an effort to distance herself from the events of that day, she shared an exchange with her former press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, that occurred as the riot was unfolding.
Grisham, who worked for Melania from July 2019 to April 2020, revealed during the 2020 Democratic National Convention that she had sent a text message to the first lady on January 6, asking if she wanted to condemn the violence at the Capitol.
Grisham claimed the text said, “While peaceful protest is the right of every American, there’s no place for lawlessness or violence,” but Melania’s response was a simple “No.”
Melania, however, offered a different perspective on the situation.
She wrote that she was confused by the message Grisham sent. “At 2:25 pm, I received a text from my press secretary, who was not present in the White House; I don’t know if she was even in D.C. I glanced at her text. She was asking if I wanted to ‘denounce the violence.’ I found the question perplexing – when had I ever condoned violence?” she asked.
