The 53-year-old first lady, accompanied by the president and hundreds of other attendees, had gathered for a glitzy annual event for White House staff and the press on Saturday, April 25, when the suspect, identified as Cole Allen, charged through a security perimeter and opened fire near the security screening area.

He was immediately stopped and arrested by law enforcement. One Secret Service agent was shot in his protective vest and not seriously injured. He was formally charged with three counts on Monday, including attempting to assassinate the president.

Melania Trump reveals how she's faring after WHCD scare

Melania was hosting Queen Camilla at the White House tennis pavilion when reporters twice asked her how she was doing.

“Very well, thank you,” she answered the question on the second try as she posed for a group shot with Camilla and the children who participated in the program, staged on the White House's tennis court.

The first lady’s comments came after Trump revealed how the incident left first lady Melania Trump visibly shaken, underscoring the emotional toll of the violent episode.

The president said the first lady immediately recognized the sounds of gunshots as a “bad noise,” and added, “Melania is very cognizant.”

“It was a rather traumatic experience for her,” Trump said.

Forced to swiftly pivot from crisis to ceremony, Trump and Melania quickly moved on from the scare and resumed their host duties as King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in Washington on Monday for a high-profile visit.

Melania Trump blasts Jimmy Kimmel for his ‘widow’ joke

Earlier this week, the 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' host faced the wrath of the first lady over a joke likening her to an "expectant widow," a jibe with eerie resonance after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting.

In his monologue, which he made on Thursday on his show days before the alleged gunman attempted to enter the event, Kimmel portrayed himself as the MC of that event.

Kimmel's jokes included one in which he addressed the first lady in the audience and said, "Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."

On Monday, Melania took to her social media to bash Kimmel right and left, writing, “his monologue about my family isn’t comedy — his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America.”

She said, “People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.”

“Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?” she continued.

The president also called for ABC to fire the late-night host, describing his jokes as a “despicable call to violence.”
