Melania Trump stays focused on heroic hostages when asked about Ghislaine Maxwell
WASHINGTON, DC: First lady Melania Trump avoided a question about Ghislaine Maxwell’s prison treatment during a White House appearance and instead kept the spotlight firmly on freed American-Israeli hostages Keith Siegel and Aviva Siegel.
The exchange took place during a press conference on Wednesday, February 4, when Melania appeared alongside the Siegels in the White House’s Blue Room.
Keith Siegel was released from Hamas captivity in Gaza a year ago after being held for more than 480 days. He was taken from his home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. His wife Aviva was also captured in the attack and later released during a temporary cease-fire in November 2023, according to the Associated Press.

Reporter presses Melania Trump on Ghislaine Maxwell prison treatment
During the briefing, a reporter asked Melania Trump about growing demands from Jeffrey Epstein’s survivors that Ghislaine Maxwell be moved to a high-security prison. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 for her role in grooming victims for Epstein and is currently serving a 20-year sentence at a low-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas.
The calls for her transfer come months after a whistleblower alleged that Maxwell has received special treatment while incarcerated. According to Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, prison staff were allegedly waiting on Maxwell “hand and foot.”
The whistleblower claimed that Maxwell received customized meals prepared by prison staff and personally delivered to her cell. Other allegations included being allowed access to recreation areas after hours and her visitors being given access to a special, cordoned-off area with snacks and refreshments.
In one instance, the whistleblower alleged that an inmate training service dogs was instructed to let Maxwell play with a puppy, even though neither inmates nor staff are usually allowed to pet the dogs.
Melania Trump did not address the question directly and did not comment on Maxwell’s treatment.
Melania Trump defends mention of documentary during White House appearance
During the same event, Melania spoke about a past meeting with the Siegels and mentioned that the emotional encounter appears in her new self-titled documentary, Melania.
“After Aviva was freed, she called me, wanted to see me and we set up a meeting in New York,” Melania said. “It was an emotional meeting, and it is captured on camera and available to see in my film, Melania.”
A reporter then asked whether it was appropriate for the first lady to reference her reported $40 million Amazon MGM Studios documentary during an official White House event.
“This is not a promotion,” Melania replied firmly.
“We are here celebrating the release of the hostages, of Aviva and Keith,” she continued. “They were in Washington, DC, and they called me. They said they would like to come over to thank me and to give hugs, and that’s why we are here. It’s nothing to do with promotion.”
Focus remains on hostages despite tense press moment
Throughout the exchange, Melania maintained her focus on the Siegels and the significance of their release. She remained seated between Keith and Aviva as she spoke, keeping the attention on their experience and their visit to the White House.
The press conference highlighted both the emotional weight of the hostages’ return and the uncomfortable moments that can arise when unrelated political and legal issues surface during public appearances.
