ATLANTA, GEORGIA: On New Year's Day in suburban Atlanta, a woman saw her niece die after she was struck by a car and flung off the side of an I-20 overpass to the ground below. She described the incident as a horrific flashback to how her parents died fifty years ago.

Melody Coburn, 43, died early on New Year's Day, according to police, after being hit by a car while traveling east on I-20 close to Fulton Industrial Boulevard.

Coburn's car broke down while she was getting it towed on the highway. A car sped straight into her while she was speaking with the driver of the tow truck.

Victoria Ann Woodson Kingston, Coburn's aunt, told WSB-TV that she and her husband witnessed Coburn being struck while they were on their way to pick her up.

Kingston stated, "When I saw it happen, the first thing I did was jump out [of] the car and scream for her to see where she was. When she got hit, I saw her spirit rise and I knew she was gone.”

Although Kingston claimed there was no reason the driver shouldn't have seen them, the driver who struck Coburn remained at the scene.

"We had our lights on. We had our flashers on. And the tow truck light was spiraling,” she recalled.

When Kingston was seventeen years old, a drunk driver struck her parents in New Jersey, and they both died nearly in the same way, she told WSB-TV.

Meanwhile, police are still looking into whether the driver who struck Coburn was intoxicated or under the influence of other drugs when the collision occurred. As Kingston put it, "It just brings this up again 50 years later."

According to Kingston, Coburn was a jovial woman who enjoyed bodybuilding and exercise and was excited to meet her 2024 goals. "She said she was stepping into a new phase, and she put hashtag 'claim it'. That was the last post she made," according to Kingston.

According to the police, the incident is still being looked into. The driver and the passenger in his vehicle were taken to the hospital for assessment and treatment. They did not, according to the authorities, sustain any injuries that would have been fatal.
