Meloni erupts at Trump, calls 'begged for photo' claim a lie in ugly clash: 'I don't beg anyone'
ROME, ITALY: A simmering feud burst into the open on Friday, June 19, after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly pushed back against reported remarks by President Donald Trump, who was quoted as saying that she had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 summit.
Meloni dismissed the comments as entirely false and used a direct video message to deliver a sharp rebuke, triggering a wider diplomatic fallout between Washington and one of its closest European partners.

Giorgia Meloni calls out Trump for false claim
The controversy erupted after an Italian television report cited Trump as claiming that Meloni was eager for a photo opportunity with him during the G7 gathering in France.
According to the reported translation, Trump allegedly remarked that Meloni wanted a picture with him “so badly” and that he only agreed because he “felt sorry for her.”
The comments did not go unanswered. In a video posted online, Meloni firmly rejected the characterization and accused Trump of inventing the story altogether.
“There is one thing he must remember: Neither I nor Italy ever beg,” Meloni said.
The Italian leader said she was stunned by the remarks and described them as “completely fabricated.” She also suggested that Trump’s treatment of allies has become increasingly difficult to understand.
“I do not know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his allies,” she said. Meloni went even further, arguing that Trump often appears tougher on friendly nations than on geopolitical rivals.

“I can only say it is regrettable that he does not show the same determination against the enemies of the West and the United States,” she said, adding that he seems “much more accommodating” toward adversarial leaders.
Diplomatic fallout grows
The backlash quickly expanded beyond Meloni herself.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that he was scrapping a planned visit to the United States, where he had been expected to hold meetings with senior American officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Tajani said Trump’s reported comments were not merely an insult to Meloni but to the entire country.
“The serious and offensive words of President Trump towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offend all of Italy,” he said while announcing the cancellation.
The dispute comes just days after Trump and Meloni were seen speaking at length during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. Images and video from the event showed the two leaders seated together and engaged in what appeared to be a cordial conversation.
