WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson has courted controversy by appointing two of the more contentious House Republicans to the extremely delicate House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, June 5, according to Mediaite.

Punchbowl’s Jake Sherman reported, "@SpeakerJohnson has named Reps. Scott Perry (R-Pa) and Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) to the House Intelligence Committee. The Intel Committee oversees the entire intelligence community and gets some of the most sensitive intelligence about the U.S. and its allies."

Mike Johnson puts scandal-plagued Republicans on intelligence committee

In recent years, Perry and Jackson have both made headlines - for all the wrong reasons. Jackson made news for his actions while serving as former President Donald Trump's doctor while working in the White House.

In March 2021, CNN reported 'Rep. Ronny Jackson made sexual comments, drank alcohol and took Ambien while working as White House physician, Pentagon watchdog finds.'

As a result of the Pentagon's inquiry into his actions, Jackson was later downgraded by the Navy from retired admiral to retired captain.

Similarly, in relation to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, Perry, who collaborated with Trump associates, was embroiled in a controversy of his own.

A CBS headline from 2023 read, 'Federal judge orders texts, emails on Rep. Scott Perry’s phone be turned over to prosecutors in 2020 election probe.'

Notably, commentators and media expressed shock and contempt over Johnson's choice to appoint Perry and Jackson to the Intelligence Committee due to their prior scandals.

Co-founder of Punchbowl News John Bresnahan posted on X, "Perry will have oversight over FBI counter-intel programs. Perry is suing DOJ after FBI agents seized his cellphone as part of the Jan. 6 criminal investigation into Trump."

Similarly, Dan Diamond from the Washington Post wrote, "Ronny Jackson — who still bills himself as a retired admiral despite being demoted to captain two years ago — to join intelligence panel."

A person also stated, "Well, its not the intelligence committee anymore", whereas one mentioned, "Your votes matter, everyone. Remember things like this is November."
