Mike Waltz threatens to freeze US funding to UN after Trump’s teleprompter, escalator mishaps

In all seriousness, if the stopped escalator was an act of sabotage, whoever is responsible must be severely punished.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz on Thursday, September 26, strongly criticized a series of technical failures that marred President Donald Trump’s address to the UN General Assembly.
Speaking to reporters on September 26, 2025, Waltz called the escalator, teleprompter, and audio glitches “insulting” and “dangerous,” and warned that the US will withhold funding and push for structural reforms until there is full accountability.
During President Trump’s visit to the @UN this week, a series of outrageous failures occurred: a sudden escalator stoppage, a malfunctioning teleprompter, and interruptions of his speech with Portuguese interpretation.

Mike Waltz says UN mishaps during Trump speech may have been deliberate
Waltz did not mince words. He described the sequence of problems — a malfunctioning escalator as the president and first lady arrived, a teleprompter glitch mid-speech, and an audio feed that briefly switched to Portuguese — as more than mere coincidence.
Trump’s escalator stopped as soon as he stepped onto it, then his teleprompter goes out right when he starts his speech.

No way those were accidents.
I’d bet UN staff (which wouldn’t have jobs without our taxes) conspired to embarrass President Trump. pic.twitter.com/0sHqlVbymy
“The whole thing is unacceptable. The whole thing stinks,” Waltz said, arguing that the cluster of failures called into question the integrity of the event. He revealed that the Secret Service has launched an inquiry and said the UN Secretary-General has promised cooperation.

US threatens UN funding freeze to demand transparency and accountability
The ambassador made it clear that withholding money is on the table. The US is already a major contributor to the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping funds. Waltz framed a pause in payments as leverage to force transparency.
He compared the effort to Senator Jesse Helms’ 1990s campaign to reform UN spending, saying Washington will demand metrics and justifications before releasing additional funds.

If enacted, a freeze could ripple across UN programs — from humanitarian aid to climate initiatives — prompting an immediate scramble in New York.
Mike Waltz pushes UN to cut wasteful climate programs
Waltz didn’t stop at criticizing the technical snafus.
He singled out what he called duplicative, climate-heavy bureaucracies within the UN system and pushed for a major audit: “We need to cut the fat. Show us what you do, how you do it, and why American taxpayers should pay for it.”
The ambassador urged agencies to prove their performance and eliminate overlapping programs that dilute priorities.
If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately.

Mike Waltz’s UN funding threat sparks global concern and partisan clash
The US posture carries significant diplomatic implications. Allies, wary of sudden funding moves, may privately warn against weaponizing dues, arguing that cooperation on global crises could suffer.
Back in Washington, Republicans praised Waltz’s hardline stance as long overdue, while some Democrats voiced concern that freezing funds could backfire, harming allies and disrupting humanitarian missions.
Congress now faces mounting pressure to weigh in — both to back US demands for reform and to ensure that global obligations are not abandoned.

US pushes for UN probe after technical failures at Trump speech
Waltz signaled that the matter won’t be allowed to fade. Expect formal investigations, requests for internal UN logs, and demands for camera and IT audits of the General Assembly hall.
If irregularities are found, the US could push for a special oversight committee and stricter credentialing for AV contractors. Whether these steps will satisfy critics or simply deepen opposition at the UN remains to be seen.
