WASHINGTON, DC: Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, pushed back strongly this week against claims that Dr Anthony Fauci was ever closely aligned with President Donald Trump on Covid-19 policy.

Miller argued that "the record shows the opposite," saying Trump consistently questioned the public health establishment's approach throughout the pandemic.

The comments come as newly released diary entries from Fauci, turned over as part of a Senate Homeland Security Committee probe into the pandemic's origins, have reignited debate over who shaped the government's Covid-19 response and who challenged it.

Stephen Miller defends Trump's Covid stance

Miller was direct in laying out his case. "President Trump was the one who questioned the origins of Covid," Miller said.

"President Trump is the one who questioned the need for requiring every single American to be tested over and over and over again."

He added that Trump also "questioned whether we should require children and healthy adults to be subject to restrictions for an illness that primarily targets the elderly and the sickness."

Miller's remarks framed Trump as a skeptic of the pandemic-era public health consensus from the outset, rather than someone who simply deferred to Fauci or the broader health bureaucracy. He argued that this narrative has been distorted over time.

Trump fought to reopen America, Stephen Miller says

Miller went on to credit Trump with resisting prolonged shutdowns, portraying his actions during the pandemic as an effort to protect the country's economy and social fabric.

"President Trump saved America from a Great Depression by fighting against those who wanted to shut down the schools and shut down our way of life," Miller said. "He fought to reopen the government."

Miller also took aim at how the 2020 campaign covered the reopening debate, arguing Trump was unfairly portrayed as reckless for pushing to keep the country open.

"The Biden campaign spent hundreds of millions of dollars demonizing President Trump for fighting to keep America open at every single step," Miller said, adding that "every day the news cycle was the so-called health care establishment attacking President Trump for questioning the experts."

The comments come at a politically charged moment.

Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through several administrations before stepping down in 2022, has returned to the spotlight as lawmakers examine his recently released pandemic-era journal entries in search of new details about the government's response.

The entries have reignited debate over how Fauci and Trump administration officials worked together during the pandemic. Some diary passages suggest he had friendlier interactions with Trump's team than current public narratives might indicate.

Miller's response appeared aimed squarely at that narrative, drawing a clear distinction between Fauci's institutional role and Trump's public stance, which frequently diverged from CDC and public health guidance on testing, school closures, and broader lockdown measures.

The Senate Homeland Security Committee has scheduled additional hearings on the pandemic's origins, meaning the debate over responsibility for key Covid-era decisions is likely far from over.
