WASHINGTON, DC: The unveiling of a bipartisan border deal has ignited a firestorm within congressional Republicans, leading to calls for a shake-up in Senate leadership and sharp rebukes from former President Donald Trump, who labeled the agreement a "death wish" for the party in 2024.

The deal, which includes provisions to grant new authority to the administration to "close" the border during spikes in crossings and allocate billions in support for Ukraine and Israel, has drawn fierce criticism from prominent Republicans.

Republicans express outrage over border deal

Utah Sen Mike Lee, expressing his disdain for the agreement, took aim at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Majority Leader Sen Charles Schumer, suggesting a need for new leadership within the party.

Lee's scathing remarks on social media reflected widespread frustration among Republicans.

"This feels like an elaborate practical joke. But it’s not funny. Not one bit. I cannot understand how any Republican would think this was a good idea—or anything other than an unmitigated disaster. WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP — NOW," Lee wrote on X.

Former President Trump, a vocal opponent of the deal, condemned it as a "ridiculous" border bill and said it was "nothing more than a highly sophisticated trap for Republicans to assume the blame on what the Radical Left Democrats have done to our Border, just in time for our most important EVER Election. Don’t fall for it!!!"

Trump lambasted a provision allowing the administration to close the border after 5,000 daily crossings.

"Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill, which only gives Shutdown Authority after 5000 Encounters a day, when we already have the right to CLOSE THE BORDER NOW, which must be done. This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party," the former president said.

The discord surrounding the deal extended to accusations that House Speaker Mike Johnson and allies were sabotaging the agreement under pressure from Trump, in an effort to deny President Joe Biden a political victory.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer defended the deal, highlighting its significance and the compromises made during months of negotiations. "It took a long time - four months of arduous negotiations. They fell off the tracks a whole bunch of times. I had to be on the phone, even at midnight," he said.

"The majority of Republican senators know it's the right thing to do. It's a compromise. I don't like everything in it - neither does McConnell. It's a compromise. it's the only way you get important things done in the Senate," he added, urging senators to "drown out the political noise from Trump and his minions and do the right thing for America ... History is looking down on every one of us".

However, the deal faced significant opposition from within Republican ranks, with senators like John Cornyn, Katie Britt, Josh Hawley, and Tom Cotton voicing their dissent. The growing dissent threatens to derail the agreement, with the number of Republican opponents nearing the threshold needed to filibuster it.

Internet reacts to calls for shake-up in Republican leadership

Amid the turmoil, social media erupted with calls for McConnell's removal from Senate leadership.

"Yes! Take McConnell out of leadership!" one posted on X.

"McConnell needs to go!" another wrote.

"McConnell should have been removed from Senate leadership a long time ago, that corrupt old man is the worst thing that ever happened to the Republican Party and Senate," someone else added.

"Can't be soon enough in my opinion," another offered.

President Biden seized the opportunity to urge swift action. "The crisis has literally never been worse," he said on the Senate floor on Monday, February 5, insisting that the "gaping hole" in the southern border "is not going to heal itself".

"This is a humanitarian and security crisis of historic proportions. And Senate Republicans have insisted not just for months but for years that this urgent crisis demanded action," he added.
