Mitch McConnell shaking hands with Trump at ‘positive’ meeting since their 2020 fall out divides Internet
WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell spoke with Donald Trump in the National Republican Senatorial Committee on Thursday, June 13.
This marks the first instance of communication between the two since their falling out in 2020.
Mitch McConnell: 'I got a chance to talk' with Donald Trump
McConnell, 82, besides having a chat with Trump, also exchanged handshakes more than once.
“We had a really positive meeting. He and I got a chance to talk a little bit, shook hands a few times,” McConnell told reporters after the meeting.
“It was an entirely positive meeting,” he added. “I can’t think of anything out of it to tell you that was negative.”
McConnell was seated near Trump during the meeting, providing him with a good chance to converse with the probable Republican presidential nominee.
Donald Trump spoke 'favorably' about Mitch McConnell
Trump spoke "favorably" about McConnell, commending the Senate GOP leader for his efforts to maintain unity within the Republican conference, Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss) who attended the meeting said.
“It was very cordial, very unifying,” Wicker told The Hill. “We talked about a number of issues and there was a real good feeling.”
He told the publication McConnell was sitting “right next” to Trump who was "very complimentary.”
“The president spoke favorably about Mitch, about all the work he did to try to hold the conference together though a couple people would stray every now and then," Wicker said.
Another senator said Trump didn't make “reference to any disagreement.”
Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump fallout reasons
Relations between Trump and McConnell strained when McConnell recognized Joe Biden as the president-elect in December 2020.
McConnell opposed Trump’s effort to block the certification of Biden’s victory on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol.
In February 2021, McConnell denounced Trump on the Senate floor, holding him “practically and morally responsible” for provoking the attack on the Capitol.
Trump has regularly mocked McConnell as “old crow” and disparaged his wife, Elaine Chao, as “Coco Chow” and his “China-loving wife.” Despite this, McConnell endorsed Trump for president in March
