WASHINGTON, DC: During an interview with Louisville's NewsRadio 840 on Monday, April 1, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) expressed concerns about the current state of world affairs.

While he acknowledged that he plans to serve out the remainder of his current term in the upper chamber, the 82-year-old Kentucky Republican did not reveal whether he intends to pursue an eighth term in 2026.

Going by his statements during Monday’s radio interview, the senator's primary objective is to counterbalance "isolationists" within the GOP.

What did Mitch McConnell say in his radio interview?

“I’m not leaving the Senate. And I’m particularly involved in fighting back against the isolationist movement,” McConnell remarked, adding. “For the next couple of years, it’s something I’m going to focus on.”

The Senate Minority Leader contended that Americans are living through “the most dangerous time for the free world since right (before) the Berlin Wall fell down.”

“My party tends to be isolationist when there’s a Democrat in the White House,” McConnell claimed. “Most Republicans voted against Lend-Lease going into World War II and Pearl Harbor straightened that out.”

In February this year, McConnell declared that he would not seek reelection as the leader of the Senate Republicans, a position he has held since 2007.

This makes him the longest-serving leader of either party in the history of the United States, according to the New York Post.

Currently, a heated competition is underway between Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-SD), and Sen John Cornyn (R-Texas), who previously held that role, to succeed McConnell.

Furthermore, McConnell stated on Monday that his top priority is to ensure that Republicans take control of the Senate in the upcoming November elections, which is expected to come to fruition due to a favorable map.

McConnell stated, "I'd like the person who succeeds me to be the majority leader," before reiterating his plea to House Republicans to approve a supplemental aid package to defend Ukraine from Russia's invasion.

“Thirty-eight different states are benefiting from the Ukraine supplemental — building equipment, much of it, to replenish our own stockpiles as we send older weapons to the Ukrainians,” he explained.

Referring to military modernization and build-up, McConnell continued, "This invasion of Ukraine has given us an opportunity to do what we should have been doing anyway."

McConnell also chastised President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for clashing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during Israel's war in Gaza.

“Apparently, Benjamin Netanyahu is so unpopular in this country that we now have the administration and the majority leader in the Senate, basically tell them they ought to have a new election, and they ought to have this kind of invasion instead of some other kind of invasion,” McConnell argued.

“My view is, in a democracy, you ought to yield to whoever’s in power, whether you like them or don’t like them, and we ought not to be telling the Israelis how to conduct the war,” he asserted.

Schumer had criticized Netanyahu on the Senate floor last month, accusing him of standing in the way of peace efforts and advocating for fresh elections in Israel.
