WASHINGTON, DC: In a recent interview on Sunday, March 24, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) labeled the events of January 6, 2021, at the Capitol as a 'terrorist attack', squarely placing blame on former President Donald Trump for 'ordering' it.

The congresswoman's assertion has reignited debates surrounding Trump's involvement in the chaotic events that unfolded during the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Debating Trump's involvement

While accusations against Trump have been plentiful since the Capitol breach, Ocasio-Cortez's statement raises eyebrows as it directly accuses the former president of orchestrating a terrorist act against the US government.

Despite numerous investigations and legal actions against Trump, he has not been formally charged with insurrection, although several cases, including those by the Department of Justice and Fulton County, Georgia, allege that he incited the riots.

As the 2024 presidential election looms, Trump finds himself facing nearly 100 charges, a reality that has prompted concerns among Democrats and independents. However, Republicans have rallied around Trump, suggesting that these charges may only solidify support for the controversial figure.

In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez commented on the accusations against Trump, stating, "Has there ever been a president, Republican or Democrat, that has been subject to this level of criminal charges, indictments, and investigations? This is not about the party. This is not about politics. This is about corruption and criminality."

Referring to Trump's alleged role in the Capitol riot, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated her stance, stating, "We're talking about an individual who ordered essentially a terrorist attack on the Capitol of the United States in order to retain power."

"That is not about being a Republican. It is not about being a Democrat," she continued. "It's about being unethical and… unfortunately, this is the state that we're in."

"I actually think that the fact that it's happening in so many places and so many jurisdictions cuts in the face of that. This is not just New York. This is Georgia. This is federal courts as well," the lawmaker added.

Despite calls from Democrats to disqualify Trump from running in the 2024 presidential race due to his involvement in the Capitol attack, the former president received a legal victory when the Supreme Court ruled against a Colorado decision seeking to remove him from the state's presidential ballot.

Recent developments surrounding the Capitol riot investigation have further fueled public scrutiny.

The House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight revealed suppressed evidence, including testimony from Tony Ornato, the individual responsible for White House security, confirming that Trump did authorize the deployment of the National Guard during the protests.

This revelation refutes claims that Trump resisted efforts to protect the Capitol, a central argument made by the House Select Committee on the January 6 Capitol Attack, per the Daily Mail.

Social media reactions

Ocasio-Cortez was widely criticized on social media for claiming Trump 'ordered' a 'terrorist attack' on January 6, 2021.

"This is a bit of a stretch no?" one posted on X.

"If so it was the most feeble attempt at one in the history of the world," another wrote.

"AOC also claims to make a wicked Old Fashioned. Doesn't necessarily make it so," someone else quipped, referring to Ocasio-Cortez's past as a bartender in New York City.

"She also claimed she almost 'died 3 times' that day…she wasn’t even around them. Listen to her telling her harrowing tail…Sounds a lot like Jussie Smollett," a comment read.

"Poor AOC. She also doesn’t think RICO is a crime. So don’t think I’ll listen to her about anything," another chimed in.
