WASHINGTON, DC: Representative Nancy Mace announced on Monday, November 18, that she is introducing a resolution to ban transgender women from using the women's washrooms at the US Capitol.

She made the announcement just two weeks after the first openly transgender woman, Sarah McBride, was elected to the US House of Representatives, according to CNN.

Nancy Mace introduces anti-transgender bathroom resolution

The South Carolina Republican told reporters on Monday, November 18, "Sarah McBride doesn’t get a say. I mean, this is a biological man" and added that the lawmaker "does not belong in women’s spaces, women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, period, full stop."

McBride responded on X, "Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness."

She continued in another post, "This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars."

She added, "Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and that’s what I’m focused on."

When asked by reporters on whether she was going after a marginalized person, Mace told CNN, "This is a biological man trying to force himself into women’s spaces, and I’m not going to tolerate it."

She added, "I’m the first woman to graduate from the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. If some guy in a skirt came by and said, ‘No, that’s my achievement.’ I’m going to be there and standing in the way and saying, ‘Hell no.’ I’m not going to allow men to erase women or women’s rights."

House of Representatives pass bill banning transgenders from women’s sports

In April 2023, The House of Representatives passed a bill that would amend Title IX, a civil rights law that bans sex, or gender-based discrimination, to limit a person’s sex to the one they were assigned at birth, according to The New Republic.

During the debate, Mace suggested that Republican support for women’s equality in sports (except for trans women) makes them "the feminists of today."

She said, "As a woman who is pro-LGBTQ, I don’t care how you dress, I don’t care what pronoun you take, I don’t care if you change your gender, but we ought to protect biological women and girls in their athletics."

She suggested another amendment to conduct a study of the supposed adverse psychological effects on cisgender women and girls of letting trans women play women’s sports, per the outlet.

Internet divided as Nancy Mace introduces anti-transgender bathroom resolution

People on the internet stayed divided and had mixed opinions as Nancy Mace announced that she is introducing a resolution to ban transgender women from using the women's washrooms at the US Capitol. Some agreed with her while some opposed her announcement.

A user wrote on X, "We need common sense in DC and Nancy is bringing it!" Another added, "Men don’t belong in women’s bathrooms. Why is this so hard for people to get?!"

A person also stated, "This is targeted towards incoming Rep Sarah McBride, the first trans member of Congress. RETWEET if you stand with McBride against this hateful attack!" One mentioned, "It’s straight up bigotry and bullying. I support Rep.-elect McBride and I hope you do too."

A user also wrote, "Use the men’s room or the unisex toilet. Leave women to their spaces." Another commented, "Culture war? I don’t think so congressman. It’s an actual human rights violation. Stay out of women’s spaces."

A person also added, "Nancy Mace is an awful person." One said, "So, if she's all about enforcing birth gender in restrooms, does that mean she wants trans men to use the women's bathroom?"

A user stated, "That’s so unnecessary, and immature of Congresswoman Mace." Another wrote, "Sir, you have no idea what you're talking about. The Trump Unity team is the best option on the planet."
