WASHINGTON, DC: Nancy Pelosi emphasized the importance of defeating former president Donald Trump in the upcoming November election to restore what she described as "normal" political discourse in the country.

During an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday, August 7, the former speaker said some Republicans have privately expressed to her that Democrats "have to beat" Donald Trump in the 2024 race for the country to move forward.

Voicing strong criticism of the current state of the Republican party, Pelosi stated that the GOP has been "hijacked" and transformed into a "cult" under Trump's influence.

She urged Republicans to reclaim their party, arguing that a functioning republic requires a strong and responsible GOP.

“The Republican Party has been hijacked, and it’s now a cult, and they should take it back because a republic needs a strong Republican Party,” she said.

Reflecting on the GOP's past achievements, the California Democrat asked, "What now" in reference to 78-year-old Trump's leadership that have dominated the party in recent years.

“So, in any event, we just have to win the election,” said Pelosi.

Speaking about Trump and his running mate Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), she said, “They have told me, some of the Republicans, ‘you have to beat them in the general because we can’t beat them in the primary. And then we will come back to our debate on the issues.’”

The relationship between Nancy Pelosi and Donald Trump had been contentious for years, with the two trading barbs throughout his presidency.

Pelosi, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, detailed her experiences of during the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, in her recently published book 'The Art of Power.'

The book provides an insider's perspective on the tumultous day when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, seeking out Pelosi.

Contrary to reports that Nancy Pelosi pressured President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 race, the former speaker clarified that she left the decision entirely to him.

Despite her influence within the Democratic Party, Pelosi stated that he did not interfere in during the transition period after the first presidential debate, according to The Hill.

After Biden endorsed Harris as his replacement, Pelosi officially endorsed Kamala Harris on July 22 with “immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future.”



 

She noted that her "enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for president is official, personal and political."
