WASHINGTON, DC: Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court during a CNN interview on Monday, June 24.

Her comments come amidst ongoing ethics controversies, low public approval ratings, and significant pending decisions from the court, as per The Daily Beast.

On the second anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade, Pelosi spoke with CNN’s Anderson Cooper about the lasting impact of the ruling and its influence on upcoming elections. When asked about her confidence in the Supreme Court, Pelosi did not hold back.

"Do you have confidence in the Supreme Court?" Cooper enquired, referencing the court's controversial docket, including decisions on former President Donald Trump's claims of immunity and ethical concerns surrounding Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

"No, I think they’ve gone rogue. It’s most unfortunate. What happened to the chief justice? Did he go weak or did he go rogue? I don’t know," Pelosi responded, criticizing Chief Justice John Roberts for his role in the decision to roll back abortion rights.

Pelosi further emphasized that justices are supposed to uphold the Constitution, not advocate for personal viewpoints.

"See, I respect their point of view. If they have a point of view about a woman’s right to choose, OK. But that’s not what they’re there to do—to advocate for a point of view. Run for Congress. They’re there to uphold the Constitution of the United States," Pelosi asserted.

The Supreme Court's approval rating, as of September 2023, stands at 41 percent, slightly above its record low of 40 percent in 2021. The low approval ratings followed the court's refusal to block a Texas law that effectively banned abortions after a fetal heartbeat could be detected.

In November 2023, the Supreme Court introduced an ethics code aiming to maintain high standards of conduct and preserve the judiciary's integrity. This code includes guidelines for avoiding conflicts of interest and recusal from certain cases.

However, legal experts and judicial ethics advocates have criticized the code for lacking enforcement mechanisms and consequences for non-compliance, prompting continued calls for more robust ethics reform.
