WASHINGTON, DC: Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently stirred controversy by stating that Vice President Kamala Harris would serve as a "safeguard" if President Joe Biden wins the 2024 presidential election and Republicans challenge the results, as per The Hill.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Pelosi asserted, "Remember that we will have the vice president that day. That’s a safeguard."

Pelosi's assertion ignited fierce backlash across social media platforms.

Pelosi dismissed the likelihood of Republicans contesting the election outcome as they did in 2020 when Biden defeated then-President Donald Trump. "I don’t think that the Republicans, if we win, are necessarily going to engage in what they did last time," she remarked.

Pelosi’s comments coincided with Trump's return to the Capitol for the first time since the January 6, 2021, insurrection, where rioters stormed the building to protest Biden’s victory.

Trump and some Republicans have already cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming 2024 election. In a May interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Trump said he would "gladly accept the results" if "everything’s honest," avoiding a straightforward commitment to respecting the results.

Trump also maintained his baseless claim of having won the 2020 election in Wisconsin, a state Biden won by a narrow margin.

Potential vice presidential candidates aligned with Trump have also shown reluctance to commit to accepting the 2024 election results. For instance, Senator Tim Scott, considered a front-runner for the vice-presidential slot, repeatedly declined to commit to accepting the results during a 'Meet the Press' interview with moderator Kristen Welker.

Pelosi’s comments about the vice president came amid a renewed war of words between her and Trump. Earlier that day, Pelosi criticized Republicans and Trump in a statement to The Hill, calling Trump "the instigator of an insurrection" who was "returning to the scene of the crime".

She described January 6 as a "crime against the Capitol," which saw "Nazi and Confederate flags flying under the dome that Lincoln built," and a "crime against the Constitution and its peaceful transfer of power."

During his meeting with congressional Republicans, Trump made insulting remarks about Pelosi's daughter, Christine Pelosi, stating, "Nancy Pelosi’s daughter is a whacko, her daughter told me if things were different Nancy and I would be perfect together, there’s an age difference though," according to Punchbowl’s Jake Sherman.

Pelosi’s spokesperson responded by saying Trump "has clearly lost his marbles. Not that he had many to begin with."

One user commented, "Just a complete idiot both Pelosi and Harris."

Another insulted Harris’s intelligence, stating, "Harris' IQ wouldn't break room temp."
