'Never-ending gaslighting': Biden campaign blasted for describing potential second Trump term as straight out of 'The Handmaid’s Tale’

WASHINGTON, DC: In response to a recent report by Politico, the Biden campaign has raised alarm over purported efforts by Trump allies to infuse Christian nationalism into potential plans for a second Trump presidential term.

The report outlines the involvement of key figures like Russell Vought, former director of the Office of Management and Budget under Trump's administration, in spearheading these endeavors.

Vought, Wolfe, and the Center for Renewing America

Vought, identified as a potential chief of staff in a hypothetical second Trump White House, currently leads The Center for Renewing America think tank, a pivotal player in a conservative coalition preparing for a continuation of Trump's presidency.

Politico reported that Vought has close ties to Christian nationalist William Wolfe, a former Trump official advocating for policies such as overturning same-sex marriage and restricting access to contraceptives.

“Vought is advising Project 2025, a governing agenda that would usher in one of the most conservative executive branches in modern American history," per the outlet.

"The effort is made up of a constellation of conservative groups run by Trump allies who’ve constructed a detailed plan to dismantle or overhaul key agencies in a second term. Among other principles, the project’s ‘Mandate for Leadership’ states that ‘freedom is defined by God, not man'."

Additionally, the potential return of Michael Flynn, Trump's ex-national security adviser and proponent of Christian nationalism, was also discussed.

“Flynn is currently focused on recruiting what he calls an ‘Army of God’ — as he barnstorms the country promoting his vision of putting Christianity at the center of American life," according to the Politico piece.

PBS NewsHour previously described Flynn as being “at the center of [a] new movement based on conspiracies and Christian nationalism," alleging that he has "drawn together election deniers, mask and vaccine opponents, insurrectionists, Proud Boys, and elected officials and leaders in state and local Republican parties.”

In response to these revelations, Lauren Hitt, a senior spokesperson for the Biden campaign, condemned the alleged agenda, drawing parallels to Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel 'The Handmaid's Tale'.

“This is straight out of 'The Handmaid’s Tale'," she said. "Nationwide abortion bans, attacks on same-sex marriage, and restrictions on contraception – this is the horrifying reality being openly discussed by Team Trump and the likely architects of his second term agenda."

“Every day Donald Trump openly supports an agenda of restricting Americans’ freedoms, dividing our country, and attacking our rights. That’s what he will do as president. It’s not who we are as Americans,” Hitt said.

“Like they’ve done election after election, Americans will reject Donald Trump and his out-of-touch extremism again this November.”

The Biden campaign also cited a New York Times report suggesting Trump's support for a 16-week abortion ban, which Trump's campaign neither confirmed nor refuted. Despite Trump's evasion on the topic in the past, Democrats seized on this report as evidence of his intentions regarding abortion policy if re-elected.

Internet slams Biden campaign

However, the Biden campaign faced criticism on social media, with some accusing them of "gaslighting" the public against Trump.

"Never ending gaslighting," one posted on X.

"Typical nonsense," another wrote.

"Nobody actually believes this crap," someone else added.

"Lmao. We’ve heard this bs before," a comment read.

"Y’all said that the first time I’m not voting for him either but the sensationalism is ridiculous," another offered.
