SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA: Nearly two months after her mother Nancy Guthrie disappeared, Savannah Guthrie finally returned to the ‘Today’ show on Monday, April 6, and on the same day, ransom notes claiming her missing mother was dead were sent to TMZ.
The pair of notes reportedly claimed to know the 84‑year‑old's location and to have seen her with some people.
Mystery ransom notes claim Nancy Guthrie is dead and was in Mexico
The notes were sent by the same mystery person who, nearly two months ago, demanded one bitcoin in exchange for sharing information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance on February 1.
“We got another letter today from this person, an email saying, ‘I know where her body is, and who the kidnapper is, give me half a bitcoin and I’ll tell you,'” TMZ founder Harvey Levin said on air Monday.
“I saw her alive with them in the state of Sonora, Mexico,” read the fresh ransom note, according to the outlet. TMZ has alerted the FBI, it further said.
Sender claims they have nothing to do with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
The person said that half a bitcoin should be transferred to his account in exchange for information, and the other half can be transferred once the responsible individual is arrested.
Levin further noted that the sender has been "persistent" despite knowing that he can be charged for sending a hoax message.
“It’s unbelievable that millions have been wasted and yet here I am willing to deliver them on a silver platter since the 11th of February for a bitcoin, but I am disregarded as a scam. They are free and the case is frozen but the egos remain hot when it comes to me,” the first letter reportedly said. “Arrogance at its finest.”
The sender said that they had nothing to do with the abduction of Nancy, as they claimed to have her secret information about her location and whether she is alive or dead.
In the second letter, they claimed that they were not after money.
“I just want what's fair and to live peacefully with enough to start my life again quietly without having to join a witness protection program,” the letter read.
No suspect has been identified so far
While the investigation has been underway for a long time now, the probe team has not been able to trace her location or turn up any suspects in the case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said that they were aware of the reported ransom note and the leads are being forwarded to detectives, who are coordinating with the FBI.
Nancy is on life-saving medication and has a pacemaker. She was last seen alive when her son-in-law Tommaso Cioni dropped her home on the evening of January 31.
