LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: President Donald Trump appeared visibly moved on Friday, August 14, as he paused a speech on Long Island and stepped away from the stage to console a grieving mother. Her 12-year-old son, Jacob Freytes- a Bronx boy killed by a stray bullet last month - was the son of retired Detective Sgt Jesus Freytes.

The emotional encounter briefly shifted the focus from Trump’s remarks on policing to a mother still mourning the sudden loss of her young son.

Trump embraces grieving mother

Trump was speaking at the Nassau County Police Academy in Garden City when he noticed Migdalia Martinez, Jacob’s mother, among those gathered at the pro-police event.

The president left the stage and approached Martinez, who appeared visibly emotional as he embraced her.

The moment stood out as Trump changed from addressing the issue of crime and public safety to speaking directly with a mother whose 12-year-old son was killed in a shooting that she has since described as a devastating and senseless loss.

After consoling Martinez, Trump returned to his remarks and addressed the circumstances surrounding Jacob’s death.

“Horrible, horrible things. We’re going after these sick people,” Trump said.

The president has repeatedly made crime and the safety of communities a central part of his public messaging, and the encounter with Jacob’s mother gave that issue a deeply personal dimension.

The killing of Jacob Freytes

Jacob, known to his family as 'Kai', was killed on July 25 in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx.

The 12-year-old had reportedly ridden his bicycle to a neighborhood bodega to buy a basketball when an altercation involving adult men erupted outside the store.

A gun was fired during the confrontation, and Jacob was struck by a stray bullet.

Surveillance footage showed the boy running into the bodega after being shot before he collapsed.

He was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Two adult men were also injured in the shooting but survived.

Police arrested William Ferrer, the accused shooter, within a day of the shooting, according to the information provided by Jacob’s family and authorities.

Jacob’s death was especially painful for his family because he was not involved in the dispute that led to the gunfire. He was reportedly simply in the wrong place when violence erupted around him.
