Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, dies at 54
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Nicholas Brendon, best known for playing Xander Harris in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', has died at the age of 54.
The actor died on Friday, March 20, after facing several serious health issues in recent years, including a heart attack, a congenital heart defect, and a condition called Cauda equina syndrome that required multiple surgeries.

The family of Nicholas Brendon shared the news of his death in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.
"We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes," the statement read.
They remembered him not only for his iconic roles on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' but also for his passion for painting and art. "Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans," they noted.
"He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was," the statement further read.
The family asked for privacy as they grieve and honor his memory, writing, “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Addressing his past struggles, the family shared with The Hollywood Reporter, "While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing."
After announcing Brendon’s death, his family shared four of his recent artworks, including a luminous night view of Dodger Stadium and a silhouetted portrait of the Eiffel Tower.
They also posted four additional pieces showing his abstract work, including a vibrant painting with the word “KIND” and a central heart, as well as a piece depicting a solitary figure standing on a glowing bridge.
Nicholas Brendon's life and career
Nicholas Brendon was born in 1971 in Los Angeles as Nicholas Brendon Schultz. He originally wanted to be a professional baseball player but later turned to acting to help manage his stutter. During the height of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s popularity, he became a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America.
In 2000, he appeared in the cult film 'Psycho Beach Party' alongside Lauren Ambrose and Amy Adams. The movie, based on drag artist Charles Busch’s off-Broadway spoof of 1960s beach films, gained a devoted following.
Brendon’s other notable TV work included a recurring role on 'Criminal Minds' and a season on Fox’s sitcom 'Kitchen Confidential,' an adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s memoir that also starred Bradley Cooper.
Starting in his 30s, Brendon faced public struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. He was arrested multiple times and, beginning in 2010, faced charges such as felony vandalism, resisting or obstructing officers, criminal mischief, and felony corporal injury to a spouse. The last charge ended in a plea deal with three years’ probation.
Throughout these challenges, he publicly apologized and even appeared on an episode of 'Dr Phil' to talk about his battles with alcohol and mental health.
