WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to work towards an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, calling the bombings that claimed the lives of seven aid workers 'unacceptable', according to the Daily Mail.

During the one-hour phone call on Thursday, April 4, Biden escalated the situation and threatened to withdraw US support for Israel if civilians continued to be harmed and killed. According to the White House, Washington hopes Israel will take steps in the "coming hours and days."

Since the strike earlier this week claimed the lives of seven aid workers, including a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, the American president has been under growing pressure to take a harder line against Netanyahu.

Notably, Thursday's call was a watershed because, as Biden stated, the situation in Gaza could not continue in the same way.

The White House said in a readout of the conversation, "President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable. He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers."

It added, "He made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel's immediate action on these steps."

Jill Biden, the first lady, has also urged the president to put an end to the violence, imploring him to 'stop it, stop it now'. At a gathering with Muslim leaders, the president disclosed his wife's concerns about the war, according to the New York Times.

The White House further mentioned in the readout, "He underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the Prime Minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home."
