BROWNSVILLE, TENNESSEE: A student was killed, and four others were critically injured after a mass shooting broke out at a pre-prom gathering, as students had come together at a Tennessee park for a photo session on Friday, May 8, evening.
The shooting took place at Webb Banks Passive Park on Key Corner Street in Brownsville, located about 60 miles northeast of Memphis.
According to a spokesperson for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, officers responding to the scene found five people with gunshot wounds. All five victims were taken to a local hospital, where one person was later pronounced dead.
"TBI special agents are working alongside the Brownsville Police Department to investigate an apparent homicide that left multiple individuals injured," the spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Brownsville Police Department are asking for the public’s help as they continue investigating a deadly shooting in West Tennessee.
Police and emergency services responded within minutes
The response from police and emergency services came swiftly as they reached the site minutes after the gunshots broke out at the park. Witnesses said that the park was crowded with over 100 students and numerous vehicles for a "photo session" just moments before the shooting, FOX 13 reported.
Officials have not disclosed details about the potential suspect and the motive behind what Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. described as a "senseless, tragic event" that disrupted what should have been a celebration.

Country Sheriff vows to bring justice for Saturah Hayes
Haywood County Schools identified the victim as student Saturah Hayes and announced schools would be closed Monday, May 11, so students, staff, and family could grieve.
The school district also said the prom had ended early following the incident.
"I will commit this sheriff’s office and all our resources to bring justice for her family. Our county is a great place to live and is a strong, close-knit community, especially in times like these," Garrett Jr. said.
Brownsville Mayor William D. Rawls also expressed his sorrow over the unfortunate incident and called the firing at the park "senseless and heartbreaking."
"To the family of the loved one who was lost, and to those who were injured, I extend my deepest condolences and prayers," Rawls said.
"Please know that I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart. Our entire community mourns with you, and we stand beside you during this incredibly difficult time."
