WASHINGTON, DC: A fiery old post by former president Donald Trump, suggesting that baseless claims of voter fraud could justify suspending the Constitution, has ignited a fresh wave of outrage.

In a December 2022 outburst on his social media platform Truth Social, the GOP presidential nominee escalated his election denialism to alarming heights. Trump called for the “termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump's controversial call to overturn 2020 election results

Donald Trump’s comments resurface as he faces a revised federal indictment accusing him of illegally attempting to overturn the 2020 election result.

Despite his claims, Joe Biden secured 306 Electoral College votes to Trump’s 232 and won the popular vote by over 7 million ballots, per AP. The outcome was determined by several critical battleground states, each of which conducted recounts or comprehensive reviews that confirmed Biden’s win.

“Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION?” Trump wrote, echoing his discredited conspiracy theories and accusing “Big Tech” of colluding with Democrats to undermine the election.

“Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”

The incendiary post followed Elon Musk’s release of information revealing how X, previously Twitter, had restricted access to a story about material found on Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020, per Axios.

Resurfaced Trump’s post ignites fresh criticism

Nevertheless, this post resurfaced on Monday night, September 2, on X where it quickly caught fire. Democratic strategists and social media influencers seized the moment to criticize Donald Trump’s dangerous rhetoric.

David Corn, Washington DC bureau chief for Mother Jones and MSNBC analyst, highlighted the post's significance, questioning whether it would make headlines. “Yet again, Donald Trump calls for suspending the US Constitution so he can be restored to power. Will this be front-page news?” Corn demanded.

Further, Democratic strategist Keith Boykin amplified the critique, underscoring the gravity of the twice-impeached former president's statements. “Trump calls for the termination of the US Constitution. Yes, the same Constitution the president must take an oath to ‘preserve, protect and defend. A presidential candidate threatening to terminate the Constitution is dangerous and disqualifying and should not be normalized.”

In a nod to the continuing controversy, the account Republicans Against Trump called for media scrutiny, insisting that Trump’s statements be addressed directly. The media "should talk about it. He should be asked about it at the debate."

"His, and I repeat, his own Supreme Court said no fraud. Threw out his appeal. Simply un-American," another added.

"This is disqualifying," read a tweet.

Another added, "Trump wants to terminate the constitution. He is an existential threat to democracy."

One user commented, "Why is this guy not in jail? Why is he able to run for president again for a third time?"
