Plane with 'Don't work for Elon' message flying during Stanford commencement ceremony sparks buzz online

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA: Stanford University’s 134th Commencement on Sunday, June 15, was far from a standard cap-and-gown sendoff.
What began as a celebration of academic resilience for the Class of 2025 quickly turned into a symbol-laden event filled with visible protest both on the ground and in the skies above, reports Irish Star.

Stanford’s graduation takes flight literally as protests and anti-Elon banner stir up ceremony
As family and friends gathered at Stanford Stadium, a plane buzzed overhead trailing a provocative message, “Congrats! Don’t work for Elon!” The airborne jab at tech mogul Elon Musk instantly drew eyes and phones upward, overshadowing even the motivational speech from Olympic swimmer and Stanford alum Katie Ledecky.
Photos of the banner exploded on social media within minutes, sparking spirited debates about Musk, tech culture, and the evolving attitudes of elite university graduates toward Silicon Valley’s most polarizing figure.
The Elon banner wasn’t the only headline from Stanford’s big day. Earlier in the ceremony, dozens of students staged a walkout just as university president Richard Saller began his remarks.

Holding Palestinian flags and signs that read “The People’s University,” the graduates left their seats in protest of what they called Stanford’s complicity in Israel’s war on Gaza. Organizers said the walkout was meant to honor Palestinian students who would never get the chance to graduate and to challenge the institution’s silence on the humanitarian crisis.
“We walked out in protest of the University’s complicity, in support of Palestine and in recognition of all the Palestinians who should have been graduating this year but haven’t, because they’ve been murdered,” said senior Emma R, who helped organize the demonstration and requested her full name not be shared.
Those who took part in the walkout didn’t just leave. Just a short walk from the stadium, at the Arboretum Grove, they organized “The People’s Commencement.”
“We wanted to still offer graduates the opportunity to celebrate their achievements while also not supporting an institution that is complicit in genocide,” Emma added.
Stanford joined a growing list of universities where graduation ceremonies were marked by peaceful yet pointed demonstrations. As commencement speakers took the stage, some students quietly walked out, raised Palestinian flags, and chanted in solidarity. Similar scenes unfolded at Duke University, New York University, and UNC Chapel Hill, where seniors used their milestone moment to highlight ongoing calls for justice and ceasefire in Gaza.
Plane-borne message draws cheers, memes, and debate amid political tensions
Reddit threads lit up with commentary. “Whoever did this, I love you,” one user wrote.
Others praised writing, “Seriously. Its amazing because a) it's a message we can all get behind, b) we can guarantee that the 50-year-old toddler in question will see this and c) aforementioned 50-year-old toddler will throw a massive temper tantrum over this. Everyone wins except that apartheid-backed idiot.”
Another added, “Now this is what I call money well spent!”
One fan summed up, “I hope that at least someone there is open to that message. But I very much doubt they paid their tuition to let their salary to be decided by morals. Thousands of highly educated people work for him and have no issues with that.”
Another user wrote, “I looooooove this!! people with money please keep doing shit like this!”
