Paul Mecurio reflects on Rob and Nick Reiner's 'healing' relationship during 2015 interview

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Paul Mecurio, a podcaster who interviewed Rob Reiner and his son, Nick Reiner, appeared on NewsNation on Saturday, December 20, and recalled the interview he had conducted with the father-son duo in 2015, when ‘Being Charlie’ was released.

Mecurio recalled the 2015 interview in light of Rob and Michele Reiner’s deaths, for which their son, Nick, was arrested, and said at that time, it seemed like the duo were “healing.”

While speaking to ‘NewsNation’s’ Elizabeth Vargas, the host of 'Inside Out with Paul Mecurio', remembered Rob Reiner’s guilt over not being there for his son to the best of his capabilities while Nick was battling addiction.

He stated that at the time, it looked like the pair had “healed” but had been to “hell and back” with Nick Reiner’s addiction. Mecurio stated that they both were “very honest” about their struggles and shortcomings.

The podcaster recalled Nick Reiner saying that he didn’t understand his father until they worked on the movie together, because Rob was quiet off-camera.

“The movie had an incredible healing power for both of them,” he added. 

Paul Mecurio further stated that he gave Rob Reiner “a lot of credit” for learning from his mistakes and added that it was ironic that, although a lot of problems between the father and son came from Rob being a big name in Hollywood, what seemingly healed their relationship was making a movie together.

“That movie, at that time, healed them,” he added.

When asked about his reaction to the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, Mecurio stated it was a “complete 180” from what he had seen when he had sat down with Rob and Nick years before.

He added that if someone had told him at the time that Nick Reiner could kill his parents, he wouldn’t have believed it.

He stated that he believed himself to be a good judge of character and recalled there being “nothing in that room” that would indicate anything but a beautiful relationship between Rob and Nick, at that time.

Mecurio claimed that the two shared a beautiful relationship in 2015 and could only hope that he shared a similar bond with his own son.
