Rob and Michele Reiner’s bodies released to family after autopsies confirm homicide
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The bodies of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were returned to their family on Friday, nearly a week after the couple was found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home.
The release followed full autopsies conducted by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, as investigators continue examining the circumstances of their deaths.
Autopsies confirm Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner died from sharp force injuries
According to PEOPLE, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner completed autopsies on both Rob and Michele Reiner before returning their bodies to the family.
While a full medical report may take up to 90 days, officials have already confirmed the official causes of death. Both were determined to have died from “multiple sharp force injuries,” and their deaths were ruled a homicide in a report released Wednesday.
The Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for further comment, and representatives for Rob Reiner have also not returned inquiries.
Rob Reiner was 78 at the time of his death. Michele Singer Reiner was 70.
Daughter Romy Reiner reportedly discovered bodies in Brentwood home
Sources previously told the New York Post that the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, found her parents’ bodies on Sunday inside their Los Angeles residence.
Reports indicate both Rob and Michele suffered multiple stab wounds, and their throats were allegedly cut. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the graphic details but described the scene as a homicide from the outset of the investigation.
Police believe the killings occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Argument with son Nick Reiner reportedly hours before deaths
In the hours leading up to their deaths, Rob and Michele Reiner attended Conan O’Brien’s holiday party on Saturday night, where guests allegedly witnessed a heated confrontation with their son, Nick Reiner.
A family friend told the New York Post that Rob had been openly expressing concern about Nick’s mental health that evening.
“They had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people they were scared for Nick and concerned about his deteriorating mental state,” the source said.
Multiple outlets reported that Nick’s behavior seemed erratic to other partygoers. The Daily Mail noted that some guests considered calling 911, though Conan O'Brien reportedly calmed the situation and no police were contacted that night.
Nick Reiner arrested and charged with first-degree murder
Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday evening, just hours after his parents’ bodies were discovered. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office told Page Six that Nick was initially taken to Parker Center Jail in downtown Los Angeles before being transferred to Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where he is held without bail.
Nick made his first court appearance Wednesday, waiving his rights. His attorney, high-profile defense lawyer Alan Jackson, confirmed that Nick’s arraignment is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
Family sought help for Nick Reiner amid addiction, mental health concerns
Friends close to the Reiners said Rob and Michele spent years trying to help Nick with substance abuse and mental health struggles.
According to the New York Post, the couple had sent Nick to multiple rehabilitation facilities and remained deeply concerned about his well-being in the months before their deaths.
“Rob had been telling people that they were scared for Nick,” a family source said. “These poor people did everything to help this kid.”
