Conan O’Brien regrets 'not stepping in' during Rob and Nick Reiner's heated argument at his party
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Conan O'Brien is reportedly grappling with deep guilt after witnessing a heated family confrontation between Rob Reiner, Michele Singer Reiner, and their son Nick Reiner just a day before the couple was brutally killed in their Brentwood mansion.
The late-night television icon hosted a Christmas party last week where, according to insiders, tensions between the Reiners and their son escalated into a loud and unsettling argument — one O'Brien now allegedly wishes he had interrupted.

In the days since Rob, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14, O'Brien has reportedly been privately tormented by what he witnessed just 24 hours earlier.
Sources say the longtime comedian and television host saw the couple engaged in what one insider described as a “very loud” argument with their son Nick during his holiday gathering.
“He keeps thinking, ‘What if I had stepped in? What if I’d pulled Rob aside or shut it down?’” an insider told Rob Shuter’s #ShutterScoop. “He feels like maybe he could have changed the course of what happened.”
Another source echoed that sentiment, saying O’Brien has been replaying the night over and over in his mind.
“Conan is replaying every detail,” the source said. “He’s wracked with guilt and keeps wondering if anything he did or didn’t, could have made a difference.”
Nick Reiner charged with first-degree murder of his parents
Less than a day after the Christmas party, Rob and Michele were discovered dead in their home with multiple stab wounds. Authorities quickly launched a homicide investigation, and Nick, 32, was arrested hours later.
Nick appeared in court on Wednesday, where he waived his rights and was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder. His arraignment has been scheduled for January 7, at which time he may enter a plea and potentially request bail, though it remains unclear whether he will do so.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman addressed the charges during a press conference earlier this week.
“[Nick’s] charges will be two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders,” Hochman said. “He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife.”
Hochman added that the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
Nick is currently being held without bail and is represented by high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson, known for representing figures such as Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein.
Prosecutors weigh evidence as family’s wishes may factor into sentencing
During the same press conference, Hochman said prosecutors would consider multiple factors as the case progresses, including the wishes of surviving family members.
“We will take the thoughts and desires of the family into consideration,” Hochman said, while emphasizing that sentencing decisions will also depend on “the strength of the evidence, aggravating and mitigating circumstances, and broader policy considerations.”
Reiner children Romy and Jake break silence as tributes continue to pour in
In a statement obtained by NBC News, Rob and Michele's children, Romy and Jake Reiner, expressed devastation over the loss of their parents.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” they said. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
The siblings thanked the public for its support and urged compassion as the investigation continues.
“We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave,” they said.
Notably, their statement did not mention Nick.
Friends say Rob and Michele Reiner struggled to help Nick with addiction and mental health
In the wake of the murders, family friends have spoken about the years Rob and Michele spent trying to support their son through substance abuse and mental health challenges.
According to the New York Post, a close family source said the couple had grown increasingly worried about Nick in recent months.
“Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,” the source said. “These poor people did everything to help this kid.”
The couple reportedly sent Nick to multiple rehabilitation facilities, holding onto hope that he would overcome his addiction and stabilize his mental health.
