'Proven liar': Jamie Raskin slammed for seeking end to Biden impeachment after FBI informant's indictment
WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin called on the House Republicans to end their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in light of the FBI indicting a confidential informant for giving false information about the President and his son Hunter Biden, reported The Hill.
Special counsel David Weiss on Thursday, February 15, charged a confidential informant named Alexander Smirnov, aged 43, for making false statements and creating false and fictitious records to substantiate the statement against Biden and the first son in relation to the latter's business dealings with Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
According to the Republicans, Smirnov was "a highly credible FBI source," and his claim that Burisma bribed Biden was the "key thing" to proceed with the impeachment inquiry.
Jamie Raskin accuses House Republicans of impeachment inquiry based on a 'lie'
The Maryland lawmaker, soon after Smirnov's indictment, said in a statement that the GOP-controlled House was pushing forward the impeachment inquiry against Biden based on a "lie."
"In a detailed indictment, Special Counsel David Weiss — who was appointed by former President Donald Trump — has demonstrated how key evidence at the heart of House Republicans' impeachment inquiry is based on a lie," Raskin said.
"Special Counsel Weiss's investigation is just the most recent to debunk the Ukraine-Burisma conspiracy theory at the heart of this fraudulent impeachment inquiry," he added.
The indicted FBI informant falsely claimed that he had two meetings with Burisma executives in 2015 or 2016 and misinformed the bureau that the company hired Hunter because he would "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems" and paid $5 million each to the first son and the president.
"It is an undeniable fact that Republicans' allegations against President Biden have always been a tissue of lies built on conspiracy theories, and I formally call on Speaker Johnson, Chairman Comer, and House Republicans to stop promoting this nonsense and end their doomed impeachment inquiry," Raskin demanded.
However, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said that the impeachment inquiry is not reliant on the charges against the indicted FBI informant.
