Rebecca Gayheart’s last post on Eric Dane’s ALS struggle highlights family’s strength
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Following the death of Eric Dane, a deeply personal post from his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has resurfaced, offering an intimate look at the family’s strength during his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane, known for his roles in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and 'Euphoria,' passed away at 53 after living publicly with the progressive neurodegenerative disease. In the months before his passing, Gayheart shared reflections that now read as both a tribute and a testament to resilience.
Rebecca Gayheart opens up on Eric Dane’s ALS struggle
Gayheart opened up in an essay featured in The Cut in December 2025, sharing details about navigating Dane’s diagnosis and the family’s daily routines. Ten months prior, Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis in an interview with People, saying, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
On Instagram, Gayheart shared excerpts from her essay, describing the frequent visits to Dane’s home, about a 12-minute drive from hers, and the shared meals that became moments of connection. She also helped cover responsibilities “when shifts aren’t covered,” reflecting the care and support she continued to provide despite their separation.
She emphasized the mutual understanding in their relationship, writing, “Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him. That I’m going to do my best to do right by him. And I know he would do the same for me.”
How Gayheart and Dane modeled strength for their daughters
Gayheart highlighted how both she and Dane aimed to set positive examples for their children. “So whatever I can do or however I can show up to make this journey better for him or easier for him, I want to do that. And I want to model that for my girls: ‘That’s what you do. That’s the right thing to do,’” she wrote.
The couple married in 2004, with Gayheart filing for divorce in 2018, though it was never finalized. Living as a separated couple for over a decade, they co-parented their daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, maintaining a shared commitment to family even during difficult times.
Gayheart emphasizes gratitude and presence during ALS battle
Despite the challenges of ALS, Gayheart’s reflections avoided despair. She focused on gratitude—for time together, for their support network, and for lessons learned through hardship. She highlighted the importance of staying present, noting that even difficult days carried meaning.
Photos from their 2022 family vacation, shared by Gayheart, showed the family enjoying time together, with Dane radiating joy and vitality in the moments captured.
